Mild 3.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Haryana’s Jhajjar District

Haryana : A mild earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale struck Haryana’s Jhajjar district on Monday afternoon, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed. The tremor occurred at around 2:49 pm and was recorded at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface. Fortunately, no casualties or property damage have been reported so far.

According to NCS data, the epicenter was located in Jhajjar, approximately 60 kilometers from the national capital, New Delhi. The mild tremors were reportedly felt in parts of Delhi-NCR and adjoining regions of Haryana, including Bahadurgarh, Rohtak, and Gurugram.

Local residents described the tremors as brief but noticeable. Many people said they experienced slight shaking of windows and furniture. “I was working at my desk when I felt the vibration for a few seconds. At first, I thought it was a heavy vehicle passing by, but then my colleagues also mentioned feeling the tremor,” said Ramesh Kumar, a resident of Jhajjar town.

Authorities have assured the public that there is no cause for alarm. Officials from the Haryana State Disaster Management Authority stated that teams are monitoring the situation closely and are in touch with local administrations. “Preliminary assessment shows no loss of life or property. People should remain calm but aware of safety measures in the event of future tremors,” an official spokesperson said.

Earthquakes in the Haryana-Delhi region are not uncommon due to the area’s location in seismic zone IV, which is classified as having a high risk of earthquakes. Over the past few years, the region has experienced several mild to moderate quakes, most of which caused little or no damage. Experts say that shallow quakes like this one are usually felt more strongly at the surface, even if their magnitude is low.

Seismologists have urged residents to be aware of basic earthquake safety tips, including staying away from glass windows, taking cover under sturdy furniture, and avoiding the use of elevators during tremors. They emphasized that public awareness and preparedness are crucial in mitigating risks from larger quakes in the future.

The NCS will continue to monitor seismic activity in the region and share updates if any aftershocks occur. Meanwhile, daily life in Jhajjar and surrounding areas has returned to normal, with no disruption to public services, transportation, or communications.
