Surjewala Slams Election Commission Over Voter Fraud Allegations
Congress leader criticizes EC for “lame duck” response amid irregularity claims…..
Delhi : Senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala has sharply criticized the Election Commission (EC) over what he termed as “voter fraud” in recent elections, accusing the poll body of offering “lame duck excuses” instead of addressing serious concerns. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Surjewala alleged that large-scale irregularities had taken place in the voter registration and polling process, which he claimed undermined the integrity of India’s democratic system.
Surjewala alleged that instances of fake voters, deleted names of genuine electors, and manipulation of electoral rolls had been reported from various constituencies. “The Election Commission is expected to safeguard the sanctity of the ballot, not to turn a blind eye to blatant violations. Instead of taking swift and strong action, the EC is resorting to lame excuses that fail to inspire public confidence,” he said.
According to the Congress leader, several complaints backed by documented evidence were submitted to the Election Commission, but they received no meaningful response. He claimed that the EC’s inaction not only failed the opposition parties but also betrayed the trust of ordinary citizens who expect free and fair elections.
Surjewala further alleged that the irregularities seemed to disproportionately affect areas where the opposition enjoys significant support. “It is not just about one party’s loss or gain. This is about the credibility of our democracy. If people begin to believe their vote doesn’t count, the entire democratic process collapses,” he remarked.
The Congress leader urged the Election Commission to immediately order a transparent investigation into the alleged voter fraud, including an independent audit of the electoral rolls. He also called for strict punitive measures against any officials or political actors found guilty of tampering with the voting process.
In response, EC sources reportedly stated that all complaints are being examined and that the commission follows due process before taking any action. They maintained that voter roll revisions and verification procedures are carried out with utmost diligence, and that isolated discrepancies do not indicate systemic fraud.
However, political analysts note that such allegations—whether proven or not—can significantly erode public trust in the electoral process. They point out that in recent years, accusations of voter list tampering and poll malpractice have surfaced in several states, making electoral reforms a pressing need.
The incident has reignited debates over the necessity for robust safeguards in the voting process, including the potential use of blockchain technology for secure digital verification, stricter penalties for electoral misconduct, and greater transparency in voter roll management.
As the political tussle intensifies, all eyes are on the Election Commission’s next steps. Whether it opts for a thorough investigation or maintains its current stance will likely shape public discourse around electoral fairness ahead of upcoming state and national polls.
