Kyiv : In one of the largest aerial offensives in recent weeks, Russia launched a ferocious overnight attack on Ukraine, firing over 400 drones and 18 missiles that battered multiple cities, including the capital, Kyiv. The assault left two people dead and at least 16 injured, with several residential buildings and parked vehicles engulfed in flames.

The Ukrainian Air Force said it intercepted a majority of the incoming threats, but some managed to slip through, causing destruction in densely populated areas. The attack triggered a city-wide air raid alert, forcing thousands to take shelter in bunkers and subway stations.

Eyewitnesses reported explosions lighting up the sky and fires breaking out in apartment blocks and cars. “We woke up to sirens and a loud boom. Our building shook. We saw smoke and fire from the window,” said a resident in the Obolon district. Emergency services rushed to contain the fires and rescue trapped civilians.

According to Ukraine’s Interior Ministry, Iranian-made Shahed drones were a part of the barrage. Authorities believe this is a continued attempt by Russia to target civilian morale and damage infrastructure ahead of anticipated counter-offensives. Hospitals also reported damage, and emergency surgeries had to be moved underground during the strikes.

Ukrainian government condemned the attack, calling it a blatant violation of international law. “Russia continues its war crimes. These are not military targets — they are our homes, our lives,” said a spokesperson for President Zelensky’s office.

This attack marks a dangerous escalation, especially after recent NATO discussions about supplying Ukraine with more long-range defense systems. Military analysts say such attacks are designed to stretch Ukrainian air defense and test Western resolve.

Global reactions have poured in, with leaders from Europe and the U.S. condemning the strike and calling for increased support for Ukraine. Meanwhile, the people of Kyiv are once again left to pick up the pieces, enduring yet another sleepless night under the shadow of war.
