Sukhna Lake Near Danger Mark Amid Sunshine!

Sunny Morning in Chandigarh, But Rain Alert Still On – Flood Gates May Open…..

Chandigarh : woke up to a bright and sunny morning on Friday, offering a refreshing change after days of intermittent rain. However, the weather department has issued another alert for possible rainfall later in the day, keeping the city’s civic teams on high alert — especially around Sukhna Lake.

The lake’s current water level has reached just 0.60 feet below the danger mark, raising concerns about potential flooding if heavy rainfall occurs again today. Officials have warned that if rain intensifies, the flood gates of Sukhna Lake might need to be opened to prevent overflow into nearby low-lying areas.

While the sunshine brought temporary relief to residents, the looming threat of more rain has kept the administration in a state of caution. Local authorities are closely monitoring the lake’s water level, and preparations are already underway for any emergency actions needed to manage rising water levels.

Environmental experts have pointed out that this kind of weather fluctuation is becoming more common due to climate change, where heavy downpours follow sunny intervals. The city’s drainage systems are also under stress, with reports of minor waterlogging in parts of Sector 22 and Manimajra after Thursday’s rain showers.

Citizens are being advised to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in areas close to the lake or near underpasses that are prone to flooding. Civic bodies have kept emergency response teams on standby and sandbags have been deployed near vulnerable areas around the lake embankments.

The Meteorological Department has predicted scattered to moderate showers through the evening. If the lake crosses the critical limit, this will be the first time this monsoon season that Chandigarh may witness an official flood gate opening.

The combination of natural beauty and risk has made Sukhna Lake both a tourist spot and a challenge for city authorities during the monsoon. The next 24 hours will be crucial in determining whether the region escapes flood-like conditions or has to brace for water management efforts.
