Haryana : In a move sparking widespread outrage, the Haryana government has served a seizure notice to a 250-year-old temple, warning that it will be sealed and auctioned if ₹1.36 lakh in dues are not cleared within 7 days. The temple, located in a rural part of the state, is a place of deep cultural and spiritual importance for the local community.

According to officials, the temple owes property tax and pending land-use charges, which have not been cleared for years. A final recovery notice was issued by the revenue department, demanding immediate payment. If the amount isn’t paid within the stipulated time, the administration has stated it will proceed to seal and auction the property.

Locals are shocked and devastated. “This temple has existed for over two centuries and is visited by hundreds every week. This is not just a building — it’s our history and heritage,” said a village elder.

The temple management has admitted they were unaware of the accumulating tax burden. “We never received proper notices before. Suddenly, we are being told the temple will be seized. We don’t even have the funds,” said a trustee, requesting immediate help from devotees and NGOs.

Social organizations and opposition leaders have slammed the government, calling the move “culturally insensitive” and “bureaucratic overreach.” Protests have started brewing in nearby areas, with calls to revoke the notice and waive off the dues.

Meanwhile, the district administration says they are simply following rules. “All properties — religious or not — must comply with state laws. The temple trust had ample time to respond earlier,” an official explained, adding that legal recourse is still open for the temple board.

The issue has quickly turned political, with religious groups warning of statewide agitations if any action is taken against the temple. The situation remains tense, and all eyes are now on whether the administration will go through with the auction — or offer a solution under public pressure.
