Chandigarh : In a landmark step towards digitization and ease of doing property transactions, the Chandigarh Administration has introduced an Auto-Mutation System for property transfers. Under this new system, once a property is registered, the ownership will be automatically updated in official land records without the need for a separate application.

This move is expected to significantly reduce the paperwork, delays, and corruption usually involved in the manual mutation process. The automatic mutation system will be integrated with the registration department’s software, ensuring seamless data exchange between the sub-registrar’s office and the revenue records department.

Officials have confirmed that this system will come into immediate effect and will be applicable to both residential and commercial properties. The automation will not only save time but also bring transparency and accuracy to land record management. Citizens will now receive confirmation of ownership change directly through SMS or email after registration. The digitally updated records will be accessible on the official Chandigarh property portal, and can also be used for applying for loans, utility connections, and other legal verifications.

The administration believes this initiative will especially benefit senior citizens and those unfamiliar with the complex paperwork often involved in property mutation. It also aligns with the central government’s push for a digital India and smarter governance. Legal experts have welcomed the initiative, calling it a revolutionary step that will modernize real estate record-keeping in urban India. Property buyers in Chandigarh are already expressing relief that they will no longer have to make additional rounds to the revenue department for mutation.

The Municipal Corporation and Department of Revenue have issued joint SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) to ensure that the system works without glitches. Authorities will monitor the initial rollout and resolve any technical issues swiftly. With this reform, Chandigarh becomes one of the few union territories in India to implement such a system, setting a strong example for other states to follow.
