Amritsar : In a major development in the fight against drug trafficking, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) carried out a significant operation in Amritsar, Punjab, leading to the seizure of 31,000 Tramadol tablets. The banned pharmaceutical drug, often referred to as a “party drug” due to its high abuse potential, was found in the possession of a local pharmaceutical company. Authorities have confirmed that the owner of the company has been taken into custody for his alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade.

According to officials, the NCB had been conducting surveillance on suspicious pharmaceutical supply chains in the region. Based on credible intelligence, they raided a storage facility belonging to the pharma firm, uncovering a large stockpile of Tramadol tablets. Preliminary investigations suggest that the drugs were intended to be distributed illegally across state and possibly international borders, under the guise of legitimate pharmaceutical trade.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded to the news by reaffirming the central government’s commitment to eradicating drug cartels from the country. “India is determined to eliminate every drug network that is trying to harm our youth. This action in Amritsar is just another example of our zero-tolerance policy against narcotics,” Shah stated.

Tramadol, though initially developed as a prescription painkiller, has increasingly been misused for recreational purposes due to its euphoric effects. Its abuse can lead to severe addiction and health complications, prompting strict regulations on its production and distribution. The arrest of a pharma company owner has highlighted the worrying trend of legitimate businesses being exploited or actively participating in the drug trade.

The NCB has said that further investigations are underway to uncover the full extent of the operation and whether the accused had links to larger international drug syndicates. This incident underlines the growing challenge of pharmaceutical-based narcotics trafficking in India and the necessity for tighter controls in the pharmaceutical industry.

The crackdown has been welcomed by locals and officials alike, who see it as a positive step toward cleansing society of drug-related threats. With coordinated efforts between law enforcement and intelligence agencies, India is taking firm steps in its war against drugs.
