Israeli raid kills 18-year-old Palestinian
One of the most violent periods between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank, which shows no signs of abating despite being one of the worst in over two decades, is currently taking place.
JERUSALEM: Palestinian health officials said that an 18-year-old Palestinian was killed by Israeli security forces on Friday during a military operation into the northern West Bank. This was the latest bloodshed in a months-long uptick in violence in the occupied area.
Mahmoud Abu Saan was shot in the head by Israeli forces in the city of Tulkarem, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Israeli forces used tear gas, stun grenades and live fire during the assault, while Palestinians threw stones and started firing at the soldiers, according to the local chapter of the extremist Palestinian Islamic Jihad group.
According to the Israeli army, soldiers in Tulkarem were shot at by Palestinians who threw explosives and stones at them. Tulkarem has become a terrorist bastion in the northern West Bank as a result of the increase in shooting attacks by Palestinian organisations against Israelis and regular arrest operations by the Israeli military.
Three wanted citizens were reportedly detained during the town raid on Friday, according to Palestinian media.
An nocturnal arrest operation by the Israeli military included the raid on Tulkarem. The army claimed to have detained five Palestinians in other West Bank communities, seized explosives, and put an end to demonstrations in the community of Biddu, which is close to the West Bank city of Ramallah.
The increase in violence between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank, which shows no signs of abating, is at its highest level in nearly 20 years. Since the beginning of 2023, Israeli fire has killed more than 150 Palestinians in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.
So far this year, attacks by Palestinians on Israelis have claimed at least 26 lives.
Early last year, as a result of Israel expanding its nearly nightly incursions into Palestinian neighbourhoods in response to a wave of Palestinian attacks against Israelis, tensions between Israel and the Palestinians in the West Bank grew more violent.
Israel claims that the majority of those slain were militants who perished during military operations, although innocent bystanders and adolescents throwing stones in protest at military operations have also perished.
In the Middle East conflict of 1967, Israel won the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and east Jerusalem. Those areas are sought for by the Palestinians for a future independent state.
