Eight nabbed for attacking Gorakhpur University VC, ransacking office in UP.
Eight people have been detained for attacking the Vice Chancellor of Gorakhpur University and ransacking his office in Uttar Pradesh. On Friday, the accused are said to have ransacked the vice chancellor’s office, as well as assaulted the vice chancellor, the registrar, as well as police and administrative authorities, as well as staff of the university.
GORAKHPUR: The Uttar Pradesh police made eight arrests on Saturday, one day after a mob of students attacked the Vice Chancellor of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University, Professor Rajesh Singh, and ransacked his office.
“We have arrested Shakti Singh, Prince Tiwari, Shubham Govind Rao, Shivam Pandey, Alok Gupta, Rishabh Singh, Mayank Rai, and Shravan Kumar Mishra,” said the Superintendent of Police for the city, Krishna Kumar.
A case was registered under IPC sections 147 (punishment for rioting), 427 (mischief causing damage), 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), and under the Criminal Law Amendment Act on the basis of a complaint by varsity proctor Satyapal Singh, he said.
The police, on the other hand, did not indicate whether the individuals who were detained were students, independent contractors, or outsiders.
On Friday, the accused are said to have ransacked the vice chancellor’s office, as well as assaulted the vice chancellor, the registrar, as well as police and administrative authorities, as well as staff of the university.
The leaders of the several departments at the university have denounced the event that took place on Saturday and have urged that those who were responsible for disturbing the calm at the university be punished severely.
