AHMEDABAD: Officials stated three BJP Rajya Sabha candidates from Gujarat, including External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, were “uncontested” on Monday.
Kesridevsinh Jhala and Babubhai Desai were elected to the Upper House of Parliament for six years alongside Jaishankar.
The career diplomat-turned-politician, who joined the Union Cabinet in 2019, will serve his second term in the Rajya Sabha from the BJP-ruled state.
Returning Officer Reeta Mehta declared the three candidates “uncontested”.
Kesridevsinh Digvijaysinh Jhala, Desai Babubhai Jesangbhai, and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar Krishnaswami “have been declared elected uncontested on July 17,” the RO said on the National eVidhan Application website.
Polling was scheduled for July 24 if nomination forms were withdrawn by Monday, July 17.
The Opposition Congress declared it will not contest Gujarat’s three Rajya Sabha seats since it did not have enough MLAs in the 182-member Assembly.
Jaishankar filed his nomination form on July 10, Jhala and Desai on July 12.
The BJP chose Jhala and Desai over Gujarat Raya Sabha MPs Jugalji Thakor and Dinesh Anavadiya, whose terms were expiring.
In the late 2018 Assembly elections, the saffron party won a record 156 seats, while the Congress had its worst performance since the state was established with just 17 seats.
