NEW DELHI: Sources expect top leaders of 26 opposition parties to attend the two-day brainstorming session in Bengaluru from Monday to plan a strategy to defeat the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

On the eve of the meeting, the Congress confirmed that it will oppose the Delhi services ordinance in Parliament, a crucial Aam Aadmi Party condition for attending.

Nitish Kumar’s last opposition unity meeting in Patna on June 23 drew 15 parties. “This time we are expecting leaders of 26 parties,” a source stated.

The opposition meeting follows the split in the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the West Bengal panchayat polls, which saw widespread violence that killed many people. Congress and Left state units accused the TMC government of oppression.

After the NCP split in Maharashtra, opposition groups would prepare nationwide protests against BJP policies, sources claimed.

The leaders will propose plans to strengthen opposition unity to fight the BJP and “expose its attempts at toppling opposition governments and taking control over non-BJP-ruled states through the Governors.”

“It’s crucial. “Several issues will be discussed,” Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut stated.

However, the BJP called the opposition a “divided lot” with no plan other than to overthrow Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

BJP president JP Nadda claimed opposition parties were building an alliance to “protect” their dynastic politics. In Jaipur, he called the coalition a “Protection of Dynasties Alliance” rather than a “Patriotic Democratic Alliance.”

CPI general secretary D Raja said the two-day session will show the Opposition’s unity to defeat the BJP. Raja told PTI that the Bengaluru summit would further unite secular and democratic parties to defeat the BJP and rescue the nation and democracy.

The gathering may possibly include Congress Parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

Former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chief Rahul Gandhi, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bihar Chief Minister and JDU leader Nitish Kumar, DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, JMM leader and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, and AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal are expected to attend.
