MUMBAI : The BJP has put forward a prominent legal figure, Ujjwal Nikam, as its candidate for the Mumbai North Central Lok Sabha seat, in opposition to Congress candidate Varsha Gaikwad. This decision comes as the party opted not to nominate incumbent MP Poonam Mahajan. Nikam, known for his role as a public prosecutor, emerged as the BJP’s choice for his educated background and high profile within the Marathi community.

The Mumbai North Central constituency, previously represented by notable figures like the late Sunil Dutt and Poonam Mahajan, holds significance in both political and cultural realms. Despite BJP president Ashish Shelar’s initial reluctance to contest, Nikam’s nomination prompted him to rally support, expressing confidence in Nikam’s ability to represent Mumbai’s interests effectively.

Nikam’s legal prowess, particularly his involvement in high-profile cases such as the 1993 Mumbai bombings and the 26/11 terrorist attacks, has earned him recognition.

However, his credibility was called into question regarding claims made during the 26/11 trial, as debunked by former top cop Meeran Borwankar’s account.
