1870 – Postcards 1st used in the U.S.

1951 – First General Election in India, Starting on 25 October, the first General Elections of India continued till 21st February 1952.

1955 – The first domestic microwave oven was sold by Tappan. In 1947, Raytheon demonstrated the “Radarange,” the world’s first microwave oven. In 1955, Tappan introduced the first domestic microwave oven, a wall-unit the size of a conventional oven, but less powerful microwave generating system. However, at $1,300 sales were slow.

1960 – The Accutron 214, the world’s first electronic wristwatch by Bulova, was placed on sale in New York City. The Accutron has the potential accuracy of better than 2 seconds per day, remarkable in its day of mechanical watches. In 1953, tuning fork watch development began in Switzerland and prototype watches were made in 1955. Its Swiss engineer was Max Hetzel moved in 1959 to continue his development of the Bulova Accutron in New York with William Bennett. The CEO of Bulova at the time was Omar Bradley, 5 Star General, US Army, Retired. In 1977 it was replaced by quartz watches.

1984 – Hepatitis virus (HIV) is discovered, that can lead to AIDS, if not treated in time.

1989 – P. Baiju, Anand Shetty, Arjun Deviah, Ananda Natarajan set a record for India at the 4x100m relay meet in 40.14s at Islamabad.

1990 – The first transplant operation of a lung from a live donor to a recipient is performed by Dr. Vaughn A. Starnes, Stanford University Medical Centre, Stanford, California.

1997 – 180 mw Lower Periyar Hydroelectric Project in Kerala commissioned after 13 long years.

2010 – Sony takes its original cassette Walkman off the market.

2012 – The 2012 Summer Olympics is credited with helping the UK economy emerge from recession; official GDP figures show 1 percent growth from July to September.

2017 – Chinese Premier Xi Jinping unveils his new ruling council in the Great Hall of the People, none of the five are young enough to succeed him.

1873 – John North Willys, an American industrialist who developed early automotive production. After his death, the Willys-Overland company pioneered the WW II Jeep, a rugged off-road vehicle.

1881 – Pablo Picasso, world famous Spanish Painter.

1945 – Aparna Sen, Bengali and Bollywood actor and screenwriter.

1962 – Soni Razdan, Bollywood actor married to Mahesh Bhatt.

1987 – Umesh Yadav, pace bowler cricketer.

1647 – Evangelista Torricelli, was an Italian physicist and mathematician who invented the barometer and whose work in geometry aided in the eventual development of integral calculus.

1980 – Abdul Hayee (Sahir Ludhyanvi) an Urdu poet and lyricist who wrote songs that mesmerised the post-Independence generation. His lines ‘Ye mahlon ye takhton ye taajon ki duniya / Ye insaan ke dushman samaajon ki duniya / Ye daulat ke bhoo ke rivaajon ki duniya / Ye duniya agar mil bhi jaye to kya hai’ are immortal.

2012 – Jaspal Bhatti, most popular satirist, TV serial director and cine actor.
