1782 – George Washington creates Order of Purple Heart. (The Purple Heart is a US military decoration awarded in the name of the President to those wounded or killed while serving, on or after April 5, 1917, with the US military. Its forerunner, was the Badge of Military Merit, which took the form of a heart made of purple cloth, the Purple Heart is the oldest military award still given to U.S. military members – the only earlier award being the obsolete Fidelity Medallion).

1906 – First Tricoloured National Flag consisting of Green, Yellow and Red, with eight Lotuses on the top, second strip carrying “Vande Mataram” in Devnagri and the third strip having Sun and Cresent Moon, was hoisted at Green Park in Calcutta by Surendranath Baner.

1970 – Ist computer chess tournament.

2021 – Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra makes history winning his country’s first-ever Olympic track and field gold with 87.58m in Tokyo.
