Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, the head of the Punjab Congress, presided over the meeting, which was attended by State Congress leaders who also spoke about the “inept” management of the Punjab floods by the State’s AAP government and held discussions about the need to demand compensation for those affected by the floods. Opposition leader Partap Singh Bajwa sat next to Warring.
Senior Punjab Congress leaders held a meeting here, expressing strong reservations against any potential alliance between Congress and AAP that may percolate down to State from the grand alliance. This came a day after top leadership of the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) met at a platform in Bengaluru where as many as 26 opposition parties announced the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I-N-D-I-A) to compete against the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Following the meeting, Warring addressed a news conference and stated that Punjab Congress was the “principal opposition” party in Punjab and that they will continue to battle with the state’s ruling AAP while voicing the concerns of the populace.
Warring ruled out the possibility of a truck between the Congress and AAP in Punjab, stating that if one existed, the Congress high command would have first spoken with the State unit about it.
Party leaders who were present at the meeting confirmed to The Indian Express that Warring and opposition leader Partap Singh Bajwa were instructed to go to party high command and relay the sentiments of State Congress leaders and learn more about the specifics of the Congress’ grand alliance strategy.
In a press conference, Warring declared that I-N-D-I-A was an alliance of all opposition parties that were “against the ideology of the BJP and RSS.” He asserted that “from independence till the present, Congress has consistently battled for constitutional values. All groups that oppose the ideologies of the BJP and RSS came together. It was portrayed as an alliance by you (the media).
