1401 – Turko-Mongol ruler Tamerlane (Timur) destroys Baghdad, killing 20,000.

1746 – French sailor’s fleet reached at the bank of Pondichery.

1808 – The leather splitting machine was patented this day by Samuel Parker of US.

1815 – 1st natural gas well in US is discovered.

1875 – The Bombay Stock Exchange is formed.

1877 – First ever Wimbledon tennis championship begins – first official lawn tennis tournament – men’s singles only.

1878 – An improved corncob pipe was patented by Henry Tibbe in Washington, which he assigned to himself and Anton Tibbe, his son.

1893 – Daniel Williams performs 1st successful open-heart surgery without anaesthesia. When a 24-yr-old victim of a stabbing during a bar-fight was brought to Provident Hospital in Chicago, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams operated without using anesthesia to remove the knife, open the thoracic cavity, then suture the wound to the pericardium (the fluid sac surrounding the heart muscle), a daring procedure for the time. He allowed a small (1/10″ long) nick to heal on its own. The patient recovered and lived for at least 20 years afterward.
1971 – Henry Kissinger visits the People’s Republic of China to negotiate a detente between the US and China.

1969 – India accepted ‘Royal Bengal Tiger’ as its National Animal, as recommended by the Indian Wild life Board. This Tiger is also known as the majestic tiger – panthere tigris.

2011 – South Sudan gains independence and secedes from Sudan.

2017 – CEO Elon Musk is the first owner of Telsa’s first mass market electric car – the Model 3.

2018 – Bright pink is the world’s oldest biological colour according to scientists.

2022 – Thousands of Sri Lankan protesters storm the Presidential Palace and set the PM’s house on fire in Colombo, leading to promises both will resign

amid continuing economic turmoil.
