Sr. Peshawar lawyer targeted in Pak regional conflicts

Islamabad: A senior lawyer was killed in firing inside a court in Pakistan’s northwest Peshawar city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Monday, according to police officials.
Abdul Latif Afridi, a former president of Pakistan’s Supreme Court Bar Association, was sitting with other lawyers in the Peshawar High Court’s bar room when a gunman opened fire at him, fatally injuring him, Kashif Aftab Abbasi, senior superintendent of police in Peshawar told Xinhua.
The attorney was shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital in the city immediately after the incident where he succumbed to his injuries during medical treatment, the official said, adding that six bullets were fired at him which proved fatal.
The attacker has been taken into custody from the crime scene, while police are investigating how the accused was able to make his way into the court building with a handgun despite high security.
Taking notice of the firing incident, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow and grief over the killing of the senior lawyer.
“The worsening law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is alarming,” the prime minister said, adding that the provincial government should take immediate measures in this regard. (UNI)
