New Delhi: While Congress has lapped up the opportunity to join rising nationwide protests on Defence Ministry’s Agneepath Recruitment Plan, senior party leader and former UPA minister Manish Tewari says, “In this day and age you need a mobile army, a younger army. You need more expenditure on technology and weaponry. That’s not going to happen if you have a very big footprint on the ground”. Tiwari has called it a ” Reform in Right Direction”.

“If you look at armed forces going back three decades, there has been a more mobile expeditionary force, which relies more on technology, which relies more on latest weaponry and which has a younger age profile — therefore under those circumstances this is a much-required reform,” he said.

Plus, whether you like it or not, the burgeoning pension bill because of the One Rank One Pension Scheme, I think must have gone into the calculus of the government,” he said.

The Congress on Friday asked the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre to immediately revoke the Agneepath scheme, claiming that it is not in the interest of ‘national security ‘ or the youth of the country.
“We demand that the Agnipath scheme should be taken back immediately. This recruitment scheme is neither in favor of our national security nor is it in favor of the future security of our youngsters,” Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda said at a press conference at the party headquarters here.
