7.2 magnitude earthquake in Haiti, 304 people dead, 1800 injured
Moscow, Aug 15 (UNI/Sputnik) The number of people, who have died as a result of the earthquake in Haiti, has risen to 304, the Agence France-Presse reported, citing the country’s civil protection agency.
According to the authorities, the disaster also left more than 1,800 people injured.
A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Haiti on Saturday. Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced that he would declare a state of emergency in the country following the earthquake and urged for solidarity in the face of the disaster.
A number of countries have already expressed their readiness to provide Haiti with humanitarian aid.
Haiti lies in a seismologically active zone and often suffers from powerful earthquakes. The 2010 earthquake left hundreds of thousands of people dead and injured, as well as devastated the country’s infrastructure.
