Trudeau Trolls Trump with ‘Canada for Americans’ Video Amid Tariff Tensions
Canadian Ministers Meet Trump’s Nominee for Commerce Secretary, but Tariff Threats Persist…
Toronto/ Canada : As tensions rise over potential tariffs, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to social media to subtly troll President-elect Donald Trump by posting a 2010 video explaining the close relationship between Canada and the U.S. Trudeau shared the six-minute clip on YouTube, titled “Some Information About Canada for Americans,” which was originally aired during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The video, narrated by NBC’s Tom Brokaw, highlights the strong trade ties and cooperative efforts between the two nations. Brokaw emphasizes, “In our darkest hours, Canada has been with us,” underscoring the enduring partnership.
This comes amid escalating tariff threats from Trump, who has vowed to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian goods unless Canada curbs the flow of migrants and fentanyl into the U.S. Despite the low number of migrants and drug seizures at the Canadian border compared to the Mexican border, Trump remains fixated on reducing the U.S. trade deficit with Canada. The U.S. had a $75 billion trade deficit with Canada last year, but much of it stems from energy exports.
On Friday, Canadian Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly met with Howard Lutnick, Trump’s nominee for commerce secretary, and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum to discuss the situation. While the meeting was described as productive, with Canada outlining its billion-dollar plan to strengthen border security, a senior Canadian official revealed that U.S. officials continue to focus on the trade deficit.
The Canadian government has repeatedly warned that tariffs would harm both nations, with $3.6 billion CAD in goods crossing the border daily. Canada is the largest export partner for 36 U.S. states, and the economic repercussions of tariffs would be felt on both sides of the border.
Despite these tensions, Trudeau did not directly respond to Trump’s social media attacks, including calling him the “Governor of the 51st state.” Instead, Trudeau’s posting of the video serves as a subtle reminder of the deep ties between the two countries and the potential consequences of any trade disruption.
