The government requests a report from the Assam Rifles after 718 Myanmar refugees enter Manipur. The paramilitary group has also been instructed to immediately turn back these “illegal immigrants” and requested to explain the urgent reasons surrounding the surge.
GUWAHATI: The Manipur government has asked the Assam Rifles to provide a thorough report on the circumstances behind the admission of 718 people from Myanmar, including 301 children and 208 women, into the Chandel area of the state without the necessary travel documentation.
The paramilitary group has also been instructed to immediately turn back these “illegal immigrants” and requested to explain the urgent reasons surrounding the surge.
The Chandel District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police were advised by the government to supervise the execution of the same and to keep biometric data and pictures of every person.
According to Dr. Vineet Joshi, Chief Secretary of Manipur, the state government had previously made it clear to the Assam Rifles that, as the border guarding force, it was required to take strict action to prevent the entry of citizens of Myanmar into Manipur on any grounds without a valid visa or travel documents, per instructions from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.
Joshi said in a statement that “the state government views the recent illegal entry of 718 refugees with utmost seriousness (and) sensitivity as the same may have international ramifications, more particularly in view of the ongoing law and order issues.”
On July 22 and 23, there were 6 batches of 718 persons.
The Assam Rifles’ Lieutenant Colonel Venkata Ravi Kiran J wrote to the DM of Chandel on July 23 to inform him of the refugee inflow.
“A total of 718 refugees have entered in the general vicinity of New Lajang of Chandel district as a result of continuous fighting at Khampat, Myanmar…Please send a representative from your office so that we can jointly verify these illegal immigrants, he wrote.
