On Wednesday, a Siachen Glacier fire killed an Indian Army officer. Several were hurt.

“Captain Anshuman Singh, Regimental Medical Officer, succumbed to serious burn injuries” around 0300 hrs, according to sources.

“Three other personnel suffered smoke inhalation and second-degree burns,” the source said. The wounded were safely airlifted.

Lieutenant Colonels were among the three injured Indian Army troops. Fire also injured three porters. The injured are stable.

Operation Meghdoot is the longest-running glacier deployment in the world.

On April 13, 1984, the Indian Army invaded the Siachen Glacier, the world’s highest militarised zone where soldiers fight frostbite and fierce winds, for military reasons. India wants Pakistan to acknowledge the Actual Ground Position Line (AGPL) as the line between Indian and Pakistan Army forces. NJ 9842 to Indira Col in the north is 110 kilometres long.
