20 Black fungus cases in Karnataka, 12 in Hubbali
12-member team formed in SGPGI Lucknow to ensure detection, treatment; Haryana notifies the disease
Bangalore, May 16 (UNI) As many as 20 Black fungus cases were detected among the recently recovered COVID-19 patients in the state on Sunday.
According to the officials sources, three black fungus cases Covid recovered patients were detected in Bagalkot, one in Vijayapura district, five in Raichur and one in Bidar districts of Kalyan Karnataka.
District Health Officer (DHO) of Bagalkot, Dr Ananth Desai said that, “All the three people have been infected with black fungus after recovering from Covid-19. Among three infected, only one person is being treated here and remaining two have opted to take treatment at their own cost in private hospitals. Meanwhile, we don’t have the stock of a drug, Amphotericin, that is required to treat black fungus, the officer added.
In Vijayapura, the first case of black fungus is reported in BLDE hospital on Sunday. The doctors at the hospital confirmed that the patient is stable and responding to the treatment. However, the attendants of the infected patient are grappling to find the drug (Amphotericin).
It is said that 12 covid recovered patients in Hubbali and 4 Covid recovered in Raichur were detected with Black fungus, as per the sources.
Karnataka Health Minister K Sudhakar on Sunday said it has been decided to start treatment for “black fungus” at Bowring Hospital in Bangalore on a pilot basis, and later extend the treatment to medical colleges and district hospitals.
“Mucormycosis or black fungus is commonly seen among those who have less immunity or because of use of steroids. The infection begins through the nose and spreads to the eyes and its parts like optic nerves and optic chiasm,” Sudhakar added.
