1783 – The first successful steamboat, the Pyroscaphe, made a trial run on the River Saône in France. It was invented by a Frenchman, the Marquee Claude de Jouffroy d’Abbans.
1795 – “Marseillaise” becomes French national anthem.
1815 – Napoleon surrenders to Captain Frederick Maitland of HMS Bellerophon at Rochefort after his earlier defeat at the Battle of Waterloo (image credit-National Geographic).
1815 – 1st flat horse race held (At English race track Cheltenham on Nottingham Hill).
1869 – Margarine was patented by Hippolyte Mège Mouriés in France. He won the contest held by Emperor Napoleon III to find a substitute for butter used by the French Navy. His formula included a fatty component that mixed to a pearly lustre, so he named his product after the Greek word for pearl – margaritari. (The U.S. dairy industry opposed the introduction of margarine in the U.S. For years, they pressed Congress for many legislative restrictions on its production).
1904 – 1st Buddhist temple in US forms, Los Angeles.
1929 – 1st airport hotel opens (Oakland California).
1932 – US President Hoover cuts own salary 15%.
1948 – Alcoholic Anonymous founded in Britain. (Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is an international mutual aid fellowship founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith in Akron, Ohio. AA’s stated “primary purpose” is to help alcoholics “stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety”.
1954, – The first commercial jet transport airplane built in US – the Boeing 707, the model 367-80, made its maiden flight from Renton Field, south of Seattle, Washington. On 26 Oct 1958, Pan American World Airways began trans-Atlantic 707 jet service between New York and Paris.
1979 – Morarji Desai resigns as premier of India. Jagjivan Ram elected Janata Parliamentary party leader.
1986 – India protests against China’s intrusion of six to seven km into the Indian territory in Arunachal Pradesh.
1991 – The 25-day-old Narasimha Rao government wins a vote of confidence in Lok Sabha by securing 241 to 111; 112 abstained.
2000 – The Maharashtra Government gives the green signal to police to proceed against Shiv Sena Chief Bal Thackeray for his alleged role in the 1992-93 Mumbai communal riots.
2018 – 8-year-old girl finds pre-Viking-era sword in Vidostern lake, Sweden, internet proclaims her Queen of Sweden.

1783 – Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy, great Indian Merchant, Industrialist and philanthropist. He aided famine relief, financed public works like wells, roads, causeways and bridges; founded dispensaries and hospitals; established educational institutions and scholarship funds; etc. He was recipient of a Knighthood and many medals.
1903 – -Kumaraswami Kamaraj, politician.

1997 – Gianni Versace, fashion designer, shot to death by Andrew Cunanan at 50.
