New Delhi: On the occasion of the 79th Independence Day, Tihar Jail authorities granted special remission to 1,497 convicts based on their good conduct during imprisonment. The remission period ranges from 15 to 25 days.
During the celebration, Director General (Prisons) Satish Golchha announced that the Delhi government has sanctioned ₹145.58 crore for the construction of a new jail in Narela to tackle overcrowding in the Capital’s prisons.
Golchha highlighted ongoing rehabilitation and reformation efforts inside jails. Around 600 inmates are being trained under the Unnati Cognitive Behavioural Programme by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) in collaboration with Osmania University. In addition, multiple organisations are actively providing vocational training to inmates across different jails in Delhi.
The remission initiative, coupled with the new infrastructural and rehabilitation measures, reflects the government’s focus on easing prison congestion and supporting inmate reformation.
