Lucknow: Many senior leaders of Samajwadi Party have disapproved of the statement of Swami Prasad Maurya about Ramcharitmanas and have spoken to the Party chief Akhilesh Yadav to take action against him. They know the Party stands no chance of winning state elections by criticizing Ramayan or Baba Tulsidas, who wrote the epic in simple lyric form and is revered as a great poet by crores of Indians across the country. Misinterpretation of some verses in the epic may need relook and review the context, yet remains the most recited book on Rama and his most trusted warrior Hanuman.

An FIR has been lodged against Samajwadi Party (SP) leader, MLC and former Minister Swami Prasad Maurya at Hazratganj police station on Tuesday for hurting the religious sentiments, intentional with insult with the intent to provoke breach of peace and others sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), a senior officer said here.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Aparna Rajat Kaushik said that one Shivendra Mishra gave a complaint at Hazratganj police station in which he stated that Swami Prasad Maurya, who is a member of a political party, has made a comment related to Ramcharitmanas which is hurting the religious sentiments.
She said, “On the complaint a case has been lodged at Hazratganj police station under relevant sections of the IPC and the matter is being investigated.”
Police sources said that Mishra, a resident of Aishbagh locality, in his complaint has alleged that through channels, newspapers and social media he came to know that SP leader Swami Prasad Maurya has made indecent and objectionable remarks on Ramcharitmanas. “The complainant has alleged that Swami had said that the text is rubbish and it should be banned immediately,” they said.
Police sources said that the complainant has alleged that Swami made a statement which divides society on religious and caste lines and creates hatred against each other. “He has alleged that the followers of Hindu religion are hurt with the objectionable comment of Swami Prasad Maurya and there is resentment among the people,” they said.
