1497 – Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama rounds Cape of Good Hope, on way to first voyage from Europe to reach India.

1809 – The first patent for a metallic writing pen in the U.S., issued to Peregrine Williamson a jeweller

1904 – The first direct current, interpole, electric motor to be patented in the U.S. was issued to Mathias Pfatischer under the title “Variable Speed Motor”.

1910 – The first U.S. patent for a steel-shafted golf club was issued to Arthur F. Knight. The shaft was formed from tempered high-carbon steel tubing, in which the volume of metal decreases toward the head.

1914 – Indian troops take Basra in Mesopotamia.

1927 – The first U.S. patent for a snowmobile was issued to Carl J.E. Eliason. His “motor toboggan” had ski-like front runners and a rear drive track.

1963 – US President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. Kennedy was travelling with his wife, Jacqueline in a presidential motorcade when he was fatally shot by Lee Harvey Oswald. A ten-month investigation from November 1963 to September 1964 by the Warren Commission concluded that Oswald acted alone in shooting Kennedy.

1968 – Lok Sabha passed notification to change the name of Madras state as Tamil Nadu.

1983 – The last wringer-washer made in the U.S., a Master Model E was built by the Maytag Company, 

the last U.S. company to make hand-operated washers.

2014 – Russian President Vladimir Putin says that he will step down when he has reached constitutional term limits; Putin has served as either president or prime minister continually since the year 2000.

2017 – Uber admits hackers stole personal info’ of  57 million people worldwide, paid $100,00 to keep shut.
