On this day, Sept. 08 ………

1854 – Dr. John Snow removed the handle of the Broad Street water pump in London, thus effectively halting further spread of cholera. He had mapped the outbreaks, and thus suspected contamination of this community source of water.

He was correct in this, one of the most symbolic gestures in the history of public health.

1930 – Scotch tape was developed by Richard G. Drew at 3M, St. Paul Minnesota, US. Originally, 3M only made sandpaper, and during testing Drew observed at a local auto bodyshop that auto painters had difficulty making clean dividing lines on two-colour paint jobs. After two years of effort in the company’s labs, he invented masking tape (1925), a tan paper tape with a light, pressure sensitive adhesive backing. Five years later, he invented Scotch Brand Cellulose Tape, the first waterproof, see-through, pressure-sensitive tape. Once marketed, the public found the tape had a wide range of popular applications in mending, sealing and joining.

1930 – 1st appearance of comic strip “Blondie”.

1954 – SE Asia Treaty Org (SEATO) forms to stop communists in Asia.

1961 – Statistical evidence linking heavy smoking with heart disease was reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

1965 – Pakistan commenced its drive into the Indian Punjab using its 1-armoured division with the aim to foreclose India’s options north of the Beas-Sutlej River line, after foiling the southernmost divisional attack mounted by 4-Mountain Division.

1974 – President Gerald Ford pardons former President R Nixon of all federal crimes.

2040 – The first visible conjunction during the 21st century of the crescent Moon with the five naked-eye visible planets – Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn – will occur. They will be seen clustered within a small distance of each other in the early evening sky, well east of the sun. (When a similar grouping happened in the sky on 5 May 2000, the Moon and the same five planets were lost to view because of the glare of the Sun from among them).

2012 – Pakistan and India plan to mutually ease visa requirements.
