Washington: Entrepreneur Elon Musk questioned during an interview why the Biden administration works to free detained athlete Brittney Griner, who was sentenced in Russia to nine years in prison on cannabis-related charges, while US federal law makes cannabis illegal in the United States.
“If the president’s working so hard to free someone who is jailed in Russia for some weed, then shouldn’t we free people in America?” Musk said when asked about Griner in an interview with the Full Send Podcast.
Griner was convicted on drug charges by a Russian court after authorities found her transporting cannabis oil in the country.
Musk proceeded to mention his own difficulties as someone who works with businesses contracted with the US federal government after he publicly consumed cannabis during an interview with podcaster Joe Rogan.
The billionaire entrepreneur said he is now randomly drug tested to prove that he meets security requirements as a US federal contractor.
Musk also expressed hesitation about any visits to Russia soon, given his support for Ukraine through the provision of his Starlink satellite internet service.
“I should probably not visit Russia,” Musk said when asked about his providing support for Ukraine amid Moscow’s special military operation there.
On February 26, Ukrainian Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov asked Musk to provide Ukraine with Starlink stations and access to internet services. Starlink began operating in Ukraine the following day. (UNI/SPUTNIK)
