AIMIM Chief Owaisi introduces bill to reduce minimum age to contest elections
Hyderabad: All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President and Hyderabad MP, Asaduddin Owaisi on Friday said nearly 53 per cent of India is below the age of 25 and yet, they are excluded from the political system.
Taking to micro blogging platform Twitter, Owaisi said ‘ I introduce a bill today to reduce the minimum age to contest elections.
According to my bill, the minimum age to become an LS MP/MLA will be 20; to become an MLC it will be 22 and RS MP, it will be 25, he tweeted.
The BJP MPs should tell the youth why they opposed my bill, he said.
The bill also proposes to ban arbitrary denial of rights to vote or contest in elections. This is to prevent laws requiring minimum education to contest elections or preventing non-convicted prisoners from voting, he said.
Such laws disproportionately target Muslims, dalits, adivasis and women, he tweeted. (UNI)
