Fraudsters manipulate SBI ATM shutter, transactions, withdraw Rs 4.5 crore cash

Sambalpur (Odisha), April 24: Cheats allegedly duped the State Bank of India of around Rs 4.5 crore between September 2020 and March 2021 by tampering with the cash dispensing shutters of the ATMs. The fraudulent transaction by the cheats came to the fore after the Chief Manager of SBI Main Branch Sambalpur lodged a written complaint regarding the fraud with the Cyber Police Station in Sambalpur district. According to the complainant, 25 cards of different banks other than SBI were used 4630 times in nine ATM counters of SBI in Sambalpur and Rengali area for fraudulent transactions. However, to carry out the fraud, the cheats were manipulating the ATM and used to jam the shutter while the cash was getting dispensed, prompting it to generate an error message. Later, though they successfully collected the money from the ATM, they filed chargeback complaints with the respective banks alleging nonreceipt of cash from the ATM after the transaction and the disputed money was being refunded by the SBI. ‘A case has been registered in connection with the incident and an investigation into the matter is underway,” said Padmasini Meher the IIC of Cyber Police Station of Sambalpur.
