SC bench to hear petitions on MCD action on encroachments

NEW DELHI, April 20: Women and other residents of the area were seen peeping out from their windows while MCD team was removing illegal constructions from the communal violence-hit Jahangir Puri area, in North Delhi on Wednesday. Nine persons, including a police officer was injured in the clashes on April 16, during Hanuman Janam Divas processions in the area. The police officer was hit by a bullet and is undergoing treatment. Lot of stones and glass bottles were thrown over the procession while it passed nearby a mosque across road.

The Mayor of North Delhi, Raja Iqbal, had promised earlier to clear Delhi of garbage and illegal encroachments at the time of election last year, assured the residents, he will stop MCD action as soon as he gets copy of the highest Court’s order, which was brought to the place by CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat and some other political parties. Petitions were filed by Supreme Court lawyer Kapil Sibal, of Congress Party and activist Prashant Bhushan too. A three-member bench led by Chief Justice heard the petitions and passed interim order, listing the hearing for Thursday morning.
