1784 – The first successful balloon ascent to be made in England was demonstrated by an Italian, Vincenzo Lunardi before a crowd of onlookers in London that included the Prince of Wales and other eminent statesmen (pic credit-www.gsnsp.com).

1817 – The first U.S. mill to roll and puddle iron was opened. (A puddling furnace reduces the carbon content in cast iron to produce malleable iron).

1830 – William Huskisson, a British statesman became the first railway fatality while observing the ceremonial procession of locomotives at the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester railway.

1854 – The East India Railway ran the first passenger train from Calcutta (now Kolkata) to Hooghly (pic credit-telegraphindia.com).

1857 – A U.S. patent was issued for the design of a typesetting machine invented by Timothy Alden of New York. This is the first such machine that actually operated.

1885 – A U.S. patent was issued for saccharine, the artificial sweetener discovered by Constantin Fahlberg.  He described mixing 2-lb of the chemical compound with 1-ton of grape sugar, by solution and evaporation. Taking advantage of the lower cost of grape sugar, this was cheaper than cane-sugar.

1907 – Indian Bank – was established on 15 August in Madras,  by Indian freedom-fighter,  businessman, politician  M Ramaswamy Chettiar,  as part of the Swadeshi Movement.  Though the oldest bank in India is The Madras Bank (1683), followed by the Bank of Bombay, founded in 1720, which is then followed by the Bank of Hindustan, founded in 1770.

1947 – India declares independence from UK: Islamic part becomes Pakistan. (The British ruled India first  from 1757 – 1858) through East India Company and from 1858 to 1947 through Crown or direct rule. This system of governance was instituted on 28 June 1858, when, after the failed war of independence of 1857, the rule of the British East India Company was transferred to the Crown in the person of Queen Victoria who, in 1876, was proclaimed Empress of India. The Independence Movement, that lasted 190 years, was first started in Bengal. Moderate leaders sought only their basic right to appear for Indian Civil Service examinations, as well as more rights, economic in nature. The early part of the 20th century saw a more radical approach towards political self-rule proposed by leaders such as Lal, Bal, Pal and Aurobindo Ghosh. The last stages of the self-rule struggle from the 1920s onwards saw Congress adopt Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s policy of nonviolence and civil resistance. Activists Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh preached armed revolution to achieve self-rule. Feminists such as Sarojini Naidu and Begum Rokeya promoted the emancipation of Indian women and their participation in national politics. Babasaheb Ambedkar championed the cause of the disadvantaged sections of Indian society within the larger self-rule movement. The period of the Second World War saw the peak of the campaigns by the Quit India movement led by Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian National Army movement led by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose  (pics credit-Google Gemini and HT Media).

1947 – Defence Gallantry Awards (6) – Param Vir Chakra,  Maha Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra,  and Shaurya Chakra  were instituted to honour  extraordinary  valour, courage and sacrifice by our Defence personnel. More  Gallantry awasrds were added later.

1949 – Chandernagore (Bengal)  joins the Indian Union.

1949 – Panchayati Raj inaugurated in 114,000 villages.

1954 – Satyagrah led by  freedom fighters  Shivaji Rao Desai, Narayan Patekar, Madhu Limaye,  Ram Manohar Lohia, etc.   started for the freedom of Goa.

1962  – Indian National Committe for Space Research  was formed   PM Nehru on the recommendation of space scientist  Vikram Sarabhai. It was renasmed as  ISRO ( Indian Space Research Organisation in 1969.

1972 – Postal Index Number (PIN Code) of 6-digits was introduced.

1975 – Army officers in Bangladesh stage a military coup d’état, assassinate their  first elected President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most members of his family, and install Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad as President.

1982 – The national program of nationwide colour broadcasting and TV was inaugurated in Delhi, coinciding with Asian Games 1982.

2008 – On the occasion of Independence Day, President Pratibha Patil unveiled the statue of freedom fighter Shaheed Bhagat Singh in Parliament House Complex.

1990 – GOI declares Prophet Mohammed’s birthday a national holiday.

Born….  1872 – Sri Aurobindo -Maharishi, Yogi,  nationalist freedopm fighter. He co-founded and edited  the newspaper Bande Matram alongwith Bipin Chandra Pal in 1905. He wrote several books on Hindu Dharma, Culture and Indian Way of Life. He visited Europe and had several foreign followers visiting him in his Ashram later.

1912 – Ustad Amir Khan, famous Indian classical music singer who established  Indore Gharana.

1947 – Raakhee Gulzar, film actress. and Bollywood  film actress. She debuted in film industry through Badhu Bharan, a Bengali film and the Jeevan Mrityu in Hindi.  Her sucessful films are Kabhie Kabhie, Daag, Ankhon Ankhon Mein, Kaala Pather, Trishna, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Ram Lakhan, Tapasya, Baazigar, Shakti, Barsat Ki Ek Raat, Border, Karan Arjun  etc. She won 2 National Film and 3 Filmfare awards apart from Bengal Film Journalists’ Award and Padma Shri in 2003. She married veteran poet,  lyricist Gulzar and has a film producer Meghna Gulzar aas their daughter.

1971 – Adnan Sami, is an Indian  singer,  composer and actor who sings in Hindi, Urdu, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam. He has married Four times and has a son. He worked in My Name is Khan, Koi Mil Gaya,  Ajnabi, Bajrangi Bhaijan. He was awarded Padma Shri and his net worth is about $ 50 million

RIP…. 1950 – 8.6 earthquake in India kills 20,000 to 30,000 in Assam.

1820 – The first U.S. eye hospital, was founded in New York City in two rooms by a young physician, Dr. Edward Delafield. Hundreds of people were saved from blindness at a time that certain affections of the eye had been regarded as incurable.

1862 – Lincoln receives 1st group of blacks to confer with U.S. president.

1893 – France issues 1st driving licenses, included required test.

1894 – The first wireless transmission of information using Morse code was demonstrated by Oliver Lodge during a meeting of the British Association at Oxford. A message was transmitted about 150 yards. However, as he later wrote in his Work of Hertz and some of his Successors, the idea did not occur to Lodge at the time that this might be developed into long-distance telegraphy. “Stupidly enough, no attempt was made to apply any but the feeblest power, so as to test how far the disturbance could really be detected.” Nevertheless this demonstration predated the work of Guglielmo Marconi, who began his experiments in 1896 (pic credit-lookandlean.com).

1932 – Philips Electronics  makes 1 millionth Radio. Koninklijke Phillips NV.   is originally a Dutch electronics and multi-product company, having  production and marketing  divisions worldwide, employing over 77,400 workers and  estimated   value at  $ 33.30 billion  (Aug. ’26)

1938 – BBC’s 1st feature film on TV (Student of Prague).

1945 – V-J Day; Japan surrenders unconditionally to end World War-II after America dropped 2 Atom Bombs on Hiroshima (on Aug. 06) and Nagasaki (Aug. 08, 1945), killing lakhs of citizens,  and  making more handicapped.  The Allies  Forces  also seized  the Tokyo Harbour and other  defence  locations.

1947 – Pakistan gains independence from Britain and thru’ Partition of India.

1948 – Don Bradman’s last Test Cricket innings.  The Aussie batsman had a record 29 Centuries  (6,996  runs thru’ 52 Tests)  to his credit. His records were  beaten by Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar in 1983.

1953 – The whiffle ball, a ball that curved when it was thrown, was invented by David Mullany Sr. for his 13-year-old son.

1975 – Military coup against Bangla Desh president Mujib ur-Rahman. He was toppled by  his opponents in connivance with Army and Pakistan supporters.

1986 – Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto arrested. She was the former Prime Minister and daughter of PM Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who led the break up Pakistan  in 1971 (Bangladesh).

2000 – Two onboard torpedoes explode on the Russian submarine Kursk in the Barents Sea, which eventually killed all onboard, despite a rescue operation.

Born…. 1957 – Johnny Lever, Indian comedy actor. Born as John Prakash Rao Janumala,  known by his stage name Johnny Lever is  known for his works in Hindi cinema.He has mastered the mimicry of film actors and is famous for his comic timing in Hindi cinema. He has acted in over 350  films  like  Dilwale, Awara Pagla Deewana, Baazigar, Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai etc. and TV serials- Zuban Sambhal Ke, Johney Asla Re etc. He has won 2 Filmfare,  1 Screen, 1 Zee Cine Awards and several nominations.

1961 – Mohnish Bahl, Bollywood and TV  serial actor, son of  veteran actress Nutan. His films are Bekarar, Teri Bahon Mein, Meri Adalat, Baghi, Henna etc. He was nimnated to Filmfare award for  Ham Aapke Hain Kaun role. He got many  nominations but failed to bag any significant award.

RIP…. 1998 – Classical vocalist Shamshad Begum, who enthralled millions of  radio  listeners in the 30s and 70s.  She sang about 6000 songs, ghazals and Bhajans. RIP….2011 – Shammi Kapoor, veteran actor from  Kapoor family and director. He was the second son  of  veteran  Prithvi Raj Kapoor, and younger brother of  legendary showman  Raj Kapoor. He acted in Janglee, Kashmir Ki Kali,  Dil Deke Dekho, Professor, Rajkumar, Prince etc.  in about 100 films.

2022 – Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, India’s investor and stock trader, called India’s ‘Big Bull’ and  ‘Indian Warren Buffett’.  Since childhood, he was interested in investing and the stock market, so he invested Rs.5,000 in his initial business, made it reach Rs.18,000 crores, and became India’s 48th richest person.

1784 – British parliament accepts East India Company Act 1784, bringing the East India Company’s rule in India under the control of the British Government. (The Act is also known as Pitt’s India Act).

1889 – William Gray of Hartford, Connecticut, received a patent for a coin-operated telephone.

1913 – The first true stainless steel was cast in Sheffield, England. Metallurgist, Harry Brearley was developing a more erosion-resistant steel for rifle barrels. In order to examine the grain structure of the steel he needed to etch samples with acid before examining them under the microscope. The etching reagents he used were based on nitric acid, and he found that this new steel strongly resisted chemical attack. He then exposed samples to vinegar and other food acids such as lemon juice and found the same result. Brearley realized that this new steel could also revolutionise the cutlery industry (pic credeit-imcteddy.com).

1919 – British troops open fire on demonstrators in Amritsar, killing 350.

1951 – Hindustan Trainer 2, the first aircraft manufactured in India, made its first flight.

1956 – National Highways Act was approved by the Parliament of India.

Born…. 1936 – Vyjayathimala Bali.  Having debuted in  South India with  Vazhkai under AVZM Productions in 1949,  she is the first successful South  actress in Hindi cinema. who performed scores of Jubilee making films like Sangam, Ganga Jamuna with Raj Kapoor/Rajendra Kumar)  Devdas, Naya Daur, New Delhi with Dilip Kumar)  and more like Madhumati, Saadhna, Ganwar,  Devta, Patrani, Kudrat,  Chandramukhi, Aasha, Aamrapali, Vaishali, Suraj, Jewel Thief  etc.  She was awarded Sangeet Kala Akademy honour, Padma Vibhushan, 4 Filmfare and Lifetime Achievement and several national/international  dance, art  and  film awards.   She won a Lok Sabha election in 1984  and was later nominated to Rajya Sabha in 1993. She made the heroine’s dance important in Hindi films. Her pairing with veteran cine actor Dilip Kumar was quite popular (pic credit-fity.club.).

1952 – Yogeeta Bali, Bollywood actress. A distant relative of Geeta Bali and cousin of film maker Abrar Alvi,  she acted in films like Nagin, Be-Shaque, Zamin Aasman, Biwi-o-Biwi, Parwana, Ganga Tera Pani Amrit, Mem Saheb, Buniyad, Raaj Tilak, Jheel ke Us Paar  etc. She married  legendary Kishore Kumar(1976-78)  and then Mithun Chakraborty.

1963 – Sridevi Kapoor, the bubby, sparking  South Indian  actress who apart  from Hindi films, also worked in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, and Kannada films. She got the right recognition in Bollywood with the film ‘Himmatwala’. After this film, she became one of the superstar actresses of Hindi cinema  who  did Tamil, Telugu, Hindi films like Mom,  Nagina, Mr. India,  Lamhe, Judai, Ladla,  Sadma, Chaandni. English-Vinglish etc. She won several Kerala State Film awards, Filmfare, StarDust and Nandi awards. Was also awarded Padma Shri by Govt. of India in 2013. She married  producer  Bonie Kapoor, the  elder brother  of Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor and is the father of popular actresses  Janhvi, Khushi Kapoor.

RIP….1795 – Ahilyabai Holkar, the Holkar Queen of the Maratha ruled Malwa kingdom. {Her husband Khanderao Holkar was killed in the battle of Kumbher in 1754. Twelve years later, her father-in-law, Malhar Rao Holkar, died. A year after that she was crowned as the queen of the Malwa kingdom. She tried to protect her kingdom from plundering Muslim invaders. She personally led armies into battle. She was a great builder and patron of many Hindu temples which embellished Maheshwar and Indore. She also built temples and Dharmshala (free lodging) at sacred sites outside her kingdom, at prominent religious places like Dwarka in Gujarat east to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple at Varanasi on the Ganges, Ujjain, Nasik, Vishnupad Mandir, Gaya and Parali Baijnath in Maharashtra}.

1910 – Florence Nightingale, the English nurse and statistician, “The Lady With The Lamp,” who established modern nursing practice by  caring  thousands of wounded soldiers in the  Wars.

1936 – Bhikaji Rustom Cama or ‘Madame Cama’, revolutionary, Her brilliant writings and speeches became a source of great inspiration for the revolutionariesShe is best known for hoisting the tricolour at the Seventh International Congress held on 22 August 1907 in Stuttgart, Germany.

1851 – Isaac M. Singer of New York City was granted a patent for the first sewing machine with a rocking treadle. Although a sewing machine had already been patented, Singer’s sewing machine was revolutionary, having a double treadle.

1865 – Dr. Joseph Lister became the first surgeon perform an antiseptic operation by liberal use of carbolic acid (phenol) as a disinfectant.

1877 – Thomas Edison invents Edisonphone, a sound recording device.

1908 – Henry Ford’s company builds the first Model T car. Ford  was the  founder of Ford Motor Co. which led  the  industry  for many  decades.

1927 – “Wings“, the only silent film to win an Oscar for best picture, opens. (judged as an Outstanding Picture 1929).

1946 – Viceroy  Mountbatten announces invitation to Congress to form provisional Government, which  the latter refused and  insisted on  complete Freedom of India. 1981 – IBM introduced the PC personal computer at a base price of $ 1,600. It shortly eliminated most other machines suitable for home or small business.

1996 – Supreme Court stays further proceedings against PM Narasimha Rao in Chandraswami-Lakhubhai Pathak cheating case.

2005 – Civil unrest is provoked in the Maldives, the small  island nation, closer to India and Sri Lanka.

2016 – Cannes becomes the first French resort to ban the Burkini.

2022 – British author Salman Rushdie is attacked and repeatedly stabbed on stage before giving a lecture at Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, New York. Radical Muslims claimed responsibility, for attack  citing opposition to his   novel ‘Satanic Verses.

Born…. 1914 – Teji Bachchan, a social worker, wife of the famous Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and mother of the famous Hindi film actor Amitabh Bachchan.  She was believed to be closer to then PM Pt. Nehru and his family (pic credit-mid-day.com).

1919 – Dr. Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai, the father of Indian space technology and scientist. He wrote 86 scientific research papers and opened 40 institutes. He set up BARC and ISRO and conducted research on Space.

1995 – Sara Ali Khan, model and Bollywood actress. Grand daughter of veteran  and successful heroine Sharmila Tagore and daughter of  Amrita Singh- Saif Ali Khan. She acted in  films like Gaslight,  Antrangi Re, Kedarnath etc.She has won  a Filmfare, a Screen, IIFAaward each and  several other film awards.

RIP….30 BC – Cleopatra, the last ruler of the Egyptian Ptolemaic dynasty, commits suicide allegedly by inducing an asp (Egyptian cobra) to bite her (some claim it was on August 10). She was the daughter of Ptolemaic king, former General of Alexander (the Great), she was  named by her father his successor but her brother soon revolted. She was defeated and captured by Alexander  and they had a  son, whom she declared the  ruler later. Alexandria was captured by  Romans led by Julius Caeser.

Titbits…. 1888 – Bertha Benz, wife of inventor Karl Benz, made the first motor tour. Without her husband’s knowledge, she borrowed one of his cars and with their teenage sons travelled 180 km to visit relatives for 5 days (pic credit-autoscout24es).

1908 – Khudiram Bose was hanged on this day in Central Jail at Mujaffarpur, Bihar at the age of 19 years. He along with Prafulla Chaki had planned to bomb the carriage supposed to be carrying Kingsford, unfortunately he was betrayed and was caught and finally was sentenced to death and hanged. This day is observed as “Martyr’s Day” in memory of the great freedom fighter. Even today the soul stirring songs composed in his honour are sung by Bengali folk-singers.

1909 – SOS 1st used by an American ship, Arapahoe, off Cape Hatteras.

1928 – General Electric broadcast the play ‘The Queen’s Messenger’ for first time over TV and Radio at the same time, called Simulcast (pic credit-faroutmagazine.co.uk).

1946 – The first mobile long-distance car-to-car telephone conversation took place (in US).

1961 – Dadra and Nagar Haweli declared as Union Territory States.

1984 – Carl Lewis duplicates Jesse Owens’ 1936 feat, wins 4 Olympic track golds.

1999 – The death of an 83-year-old man Virgil Foster, a bee-keeper stung by a swarm of Africanized Killer  Bees  marked the first fatality by that cause in the state of California (USA).  His three hives had been taken over by wild Africanized honeybees. Originally hybridized in Brazil in the 1950s, the killer bees had migrated north through Mexico.

2008 – Abhinav Bindra wins the men’s 10 m air rifle at the Beijing Olympics, achieving the first individual Olympic gold medal for India and the country’s first gold medal in any Olympic event since 1980.

Born…. 1916 – General Gopal  Gurunath Bewoor,  8th Chief of Indian Army between  Jan. 16, 1973 and May 31, 1975.  Coming from a  Kannda Deshstha Brahmin family, Gen. Bewoor was edicated in RIMC Dehradun and IMA, joined the 10th Baluch Regiment in 1938, faught on Burma border, later  overlooked the bifurcation of  India-Pakistan Army at Partition of india in 1947  as  Secreary Army Partition Committee.  He was appointed DG National Cadet Corps, rose to be the first Army Chief  coming from NCC  arm.  After retirement he served as Ambassador to Denmark and  Senate Member, University of Pune. He was honoured with War Medal,  PVSM and Padma Bhushan.

1924 – Lalmani Mishra, a sage of the Indian music world, was as well known for his scholarship as his art. Rich in versatility, he did research on the history and development of Indian musical instruments, along with developing the technique of playing the veena secretly by listening to Ustad Abdul Aziz Khan of Patiala. To preserve these received swaras of Samaveda, he created ‘Raag Sameshwari’. For the first time in human history, it was possible to listen to the twenty-two Shrutis ordained by Bharata Muni on the Shruti-Veena, a musical instrument created by Dr. Mishra.

1943 – Pervaiz Musharaf, General and politician, 10th President of Pakistan. Delhi-born. General of Pakistan, deposed PM Navaz Sheriff (who had appointed him Army  Chief  in 1998) and became 10th President/dictator  of Pakistan (2001-08).   He was also responsible for attacking India in 1999 in Kargill Hills (J&K) and was defeated  squarely by the Indian Forces.

1961 – Suniel Shetty, popular Bollywood   actor.  He worked in Hndi, Tamil and Telugu films. He is also a producer/director. He won filmfare award for film Dhadkan in 2001. Zee Cine award and GIFA and Stardust awards.  His popular films are; Mohra, Waqt  Hamara Hai, Dilwale, Gopi Kishen, Vinasak,  Border, Hera Pheri series, Mein Hoon Na, Rudrakash, A Gentleman etc.

1974 – Anju Jain, Indian Opener r(women’s team). She was also a wicketkeeper and played 8 Tests, 65 ODIs. She was awarded Aruna award in 2005. She has a record  (jointly with SJ Taylor of England)  for 51  stumping in ODIs. She has coached  Bangladesh women’s team and now coaches Indian domestic teams

. RIP…. 2018 – V.S. Naipaul, a Trinidadian-born British writer of Indian  origin and Nobel Prize Laureate. His father Seepersad  Naipaul  and brother  Shiva  have also been journalists.  His novels  A House of Mr. Visawas, In A Free State,  won him Booker Prize (1971), Trinity Cross, Jerusalem Prize and Knoghthood  in 1990.   Also wrote London, the Carribean Voices,  Marriage, The Middle Passage, India: Area of Darkness, A Flag on the Island etc. He was awarded Nobel Prize for Literature  in 2001.

You may have known…. The infant mortality rate in India (death per 1000 births) in 1950-1955 was 165. In 2005-2010 it had dropped to 52.9.

2019 – Monsoon flooding in southern and western India kills at least 150 with 40 dead in Kerala state and 100,000 in emergency relief camp.

Born…. 1860 – Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, the great architect of the renaissance of Hindustani music and who played a vital role in giving re-birth to North Indian classical music (more details given in August 09 issue-by error).

1894 – Varahagiri Venkata Giri, the fourth President of India from  August  24, 1969 to August 24, 1974. After returning to India from Ireland  after completing his Degree in Law,  in 1916, VV Giri became a part of the ongoing movement of workers. Although his political journey began while studying in Ireland, he became active for full independence by becoming a part of the ‘Indian Freedom Struggle’.  In 1969 he defeated the officialo Congress candidate  Neelam Sanjiva Reddy   becuase of ‘Call for Conscience’  by then PM Indira Gandhi.  Reddy was supposed to be closer  to old Congressmen,  called ‘Syndicate’.   Later  in  1975,  V V Giri was awarded the country’s highest civilian award ‘Bharat Ratna’ for his outstanding contribution to the upliftment of workers and the freedom struggle of the country.

1934- P L Raj (Devraj Peter Lewis) was an Indian choreographer  who worked in the 1960s-80s. His famous films were Howrah Bridge, Junglee, Professor, Teesri Majil, Inteqam, Sholey, Don, Sargam Saagar, Ek Duje Ke Liye  etc. He also worked in Telugu, Tamil, Marathi and Punjabi films.

1963 – Phoolan Devi, an Indian politician who turned rebel MP. She was born in a lower class in a small village of Gorham in Uttar Pradesh to a mallah in Purva. Phoolan was locked up in a room in a house in Behmai village. She was beaten, raped, and humiliated by several men over a period of three weeks. They made her walk around the village naked. She managed to escape from this three-week imprisonment. After being in jail for eleven years without trial, Phoolan was released in 1994. This happened at a time when Dalit people were rallying in support of Phoolan and Phoolan was seen as a symbol of this community. Phoolan converted to Buddhism upon er release. She won the (Lok Sabha) election from the Mirzapur seat in UP.

RIP…. 1986 – General A.S. Vaidya, who was Chief of Army Staff, at the time of ‘Operation Blue Star’. Was shot dead at Pune. (detailed post  published on August 09 – by Error).

1999 – Padma Bhushan Acharya Baldev Upadhyaya, Eminent Sanskrit Scholar in India (published on Aug. 09- by Error).

Cannibalism and Necromancy – The Aghori way of life, Banaras: The formidable Aghori Sadhus of  Banaras (Varanasi) are easily recognisable in their long, matted hair and bodies smeared in ash. Their way of connecting to God is, very subtly put, off-beat. These monistic saints believe in renouncing the world by finding ‘ purity in the filthiest.’ This leads them to eat human remains after cremation and have intercourse with corpses. They are believed to be possess tantrik powers of healing.

1753 – The first steam engine imported into the American colonies. It was installed to pump water from a copper mine.

1843 – A U.S. patent was issued, antedated to 29 Jul 1843, for a hand-cranked Ice-cream Freezer invented by Nancy M. Johnson.

1889 – Dan Rylands patented the screw cap.

1925 – Government Treasury from Postal Train was looted near Kakuri Station just about 22 km. away from Lucknow by the members of ‘Hindustan Socialist Republican Association.’ The Kakori Train Robbery was executed by Freedomfighters Ram Prasad Bismil, Chandershekhar Azad, Ashfaqulla Khan, Rajendra Lahiri, Sachindra Bakshi, Keshav Chakravarty, Manmathnath Gupta, Mukundi Lal, Murari Lal Khanna and Banwari Lal. One passenger was killed in the Robbery, which  was a bag of cash Rs. 8,000 (a big amount those days).

1930 – In the ‘Gandhi Cap Case’ in Guntur, the magistrate prohibits wearing of Gandhi caps within a five-mile radius of the town. (In his history of the 150 years of the Madras High Court, lists it as one of the cause cèlébres of the Court. Apparently in June 1930, the District Magistrate of Guntur passed an order that the Gandhi cap could not be worn by anyone in a public place in Guntur and within five miles of it. Negotiations on this went back and forth, but the Magistrate eventually backed the Police plea that they could not differentiate between who was a member of the Civil Disobedience Movement (all of whom wore the caps) and who was not but who might be wearing the cap).

1934 – The first rocket fired in America to break the sound barrier was launched by the American Rocket Society from Staten Island, New York. Its flight reached a top speed of 700 mph, a maxium height of 400-ft, 1,600-ft horizontal range and ended in New York Bay.

1945 – The first “bug” in a computer programme was discovered by Grace Hopper: a moth was removed with tweezers from a relay and taped into the log. The grand dame of military computing, computer scientist and U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, coined the terms ‘bug’ and ‘debug’ (pic credit-thefamouspeople.com).  

1945 – Second  Atomic Bomb (B-29)  is dropped on the Japanese city  of Nagasaki by American Air Force  to  bring down fighting Japanese to accept defeat in World War -II. About 1,50,000 to 2,40,000  Citizens were  burnt  and  many more  bruised badly, in the two bombings as the temperature  rose to 7,000 degrees C within seconds of the bombing.. Japan and Axis Group (including Germany, Italy,  Austria etc.) offered to surrender and accept  terms of Peace from Allies powers (Amercia, England, France and USSR).

The nuclear scientist Albert Einstein who  developed the Bombs,  later apologised to the World Citizens for his ‘heinous crime’  and chided US presidents DD Eisenhower and Herry S Truman for ordering him for  such a distructive warfare.

1963 – India was the first country to add its signature to the test-ban treaty at Moscow.

1996 – Sachin Tendulkar, 23, chosen India’s cricket captain. Sachin went to be the top Indian and World’s  batter with  15,921 runs from 200 Tests,  18,426 from 463 ODIs and  2334 from 79 IPL matches. He has scored 100 International Centuries  in cricket. He is given epthets God of Cricket and Little Master by his fans and admirers.  Sachin  was honoured with Bharat Ratna by Govt. of India in  2014 and won several other cricketing and  civilian  awards earlier.

1998 – India moves the World Trade Organisation against the European Union reimposing anti-dumping duties on unbleached cotton gray fabric imports.

2000 – Indian  Parliament approves the Madhya Pradesh Reorganisation Bill 2000, paving the way for the creation of a separate Chhattisgarh State.  And  reorganisation  of Uttar Pradesh  carving out Uttranchal  (now called Uttrakhand).

2016 – Longest-ever hunger strike ends as Indian human rights campaigner Irom Sharmila Chanu  from  Manipur tastes honey after 16 years. She is called the Iron Lady of Manipur. She agitated  for repeal of Armed Forces Act 1958 and removal of Central Security Forces from  Manipur and China  borders.

2024 – A trainee female doctor is raped and murdered in a Kolkata’s  RG  Kar  Medical College &  Hospital, sparking huge outrage and protests. It led to statewide  agitations and national calls by women’s and  Human Rights organisations for  arrest and punishment to perpetrators of crime.

Born…. 1648 – Johann Michael Bach, famous German composer burn in Arnstadt. He mastered mouth organs and  worked in a govt. office.

He wrote several books on music under psudonyms  Vishnu Sharma and Chaturpandit.  He established  Marris College of Musin in Lucknow in 1926, now known as Bhatkhande Music Institute, a Deemed University.

1893 – Shivpujan Sahai, famous Hindi story writer,  novelist  and editor who wrote in Bhojpuri and Hindi.  He was awarded  Padma Bhushan by Govt. of India..

1963 – Whitney Houston, American  singer. model, film actor, producer and philanthropist. He net worth was $ 20 million.

1975 – Mahesh Babu. Tamil and Telugu actor, model and producer. He is one of the highest paid actors presently. He acted in Businessman, Dookudu, Athadu etc.

RIP…. 1999 – Padma Bhushan Acharya Baldev Upadhyaya, Eminent Sanskrit Scholar,  essayist and critic.  He worked for Uttar Pradesh Sanskrit  Akademy,  Sampoornanand Sanskrit Vidyalya and did lot of research on Vedanta, Hindi/Sanatan Sanskriti.  He wrote and edited over 25 books and edited magazines  Saraswati Bhavan Granthmala and  Saraswati Sushma.

You may have known…. The total fertility rate in India (number of children per woman) in 1950-1955 was 5.9. 1509 – The Emperor Krishnadeva Raya is crowned, marking the beginning of the regeneration of the Vijayanagara Empire in Southern India.

1709 – First known ascent in a hot-air balloon was made in Portugal by Father Bartolomeu de Gusmão – indoors – as a demonstration before the Portuguese court.

1854 – Horace Smith & Daniel Wesson were issued a U.S. patent for their design of a self-contained metal bullet cartridge. The invention related to the arrangement of the tallow within the cartridge between the ball and charge of powder. The rimfire cartridge included percussion-priming. It was improved upon with patent on 17 Apr 1860. However, Smith and Wesson, could not produce a revolver to fire their new bullet until several years later when the Colt patent on the mechanically rotating cylinder design expired in 1857 (pic credit-wikipedia.com).

1899 – Albert T. Marshall of Brockton,  received a U.S. patent for a refrigerator, titled “Automatic Refrigerating Apparatus”.

1911 – Following the end of a heavy monsoon, parts of India were hit by a cholera epidemic.

1929 – The German airship Graf Zeppelin began a planned 21,700-mile round-the-world flight. Lifting off in the dark, at 12:40 am, it headed west leaving Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey (to where it returned 21 days, 7 hrs and 26 mins later). Its passengers, including millionaires, scientists, writers and just one woman, were sent off with the cheers of about 15,000 onlookers. 1936 – Corbett National Park was established. (It is the oldest national park in India and was established as Hailey National Park to protect the endangered Bengal tiger. It is located in Nainital district of Uttarakhand and was named after Jim Corbett who played a key role in its establishment. The park was the first to come under the Project Tiger initiative).

1942 – Mahatma Gandhi launched the Quit India Movement for freedom from British rule in Mumbai.

1946 – India agrees to give Bhutan 32 sq miles. India agreed to return the Dewangiri Hill strips in return for a revision of the essential provisions of the 1910 treaty. 1966 – India endorses the Partial Nuclear Ban Treaty.

1967 – Indian Central government (led by PM Indira Gandhi),  suffered a token defeat in the Lok Sabha, for the first time since independence,

1967 – ASEAN is founded. Initially it  had  10 members namely  Singapore, Brunie, Cambodia,  Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar,  Phillipines, Thailand  and Vietnam.  Today it has 27 Participants including India, China, EU, USA. Thailand, Pakistan and Bangladesh  (map credit-worldatlas.com)

1974 – US President Nixon announced his resignation due to the Watergate scandal, becoming the first US President to resign while in office.

1984 – India’s ace printer  P.T. Usha at Los Angeles Olymoics,  sets record for 400m H. (Women) in 55.42, yet she  stood 4th and missed the Bronze  medal by just 0.01 sec.

1990 – Violent protes ts rock Bihar against Mandal Commission Report implementation.

1991 – India and Soviet Union extend their treaty of peace, friendship and co-operation for 20 more years.

Born…. 1905 – Major Dhyanchand, one of the greatest  Hockey players of India,  called the  ‘Hockey ka Jadoogar’  for his ball dribbling skills and scoring goals. He participated in 8 Olympics  as  a player or a coach,  wherein India won 7 Gold medals. He scored over 1,000 Goals in his  career from 1928-1949. He scored the winning goals in 1928, 1932, 1936.  He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1958.  A sports award in his name is started  as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award. He was offered German citizenship by Adolf Hitler in 1936, but Major Dhyan Chand declined the offer

1940 – Dilip Sardesai,  was  a Goa born  high scoring Indian Opener  of late 1950’s to 1970s. He scored a double Century against West Indiis in 1971, He had scored his first   Double Century  against New Zealand in Bombay  and  3 Centuries  during  his Test  career. His son Rajdeep  is a famousTV  news anchor and  consulting editor of India Today (pic credit-latestly.com).

1948 – Kapil Sibal, a prominent Indian lawyer and a Congress politician. Sibal has represented several high-profile cases in the Supreme Court. He is a member of the Rajya Sabha. It is generally accepted that he represented Congress and members of civil society in the Supreme Court of India, often holding socially liberal views. He had been President of the Supreme Court Bar association and Union Minister for Law under Manmohan Singh’s premiership  from may 2009 to May 2014.

1994 – Saikhom Mirabai Chanu is an Indian weightlifter. She has won multiple medals at the Commonwealth Games and the World Championships. She won a Silver medal in the women’s 49 kg category at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She is the current world record holder in Clean & Jerk in the 49 kg category. Mirabai  won a Gold medal in recently  finished Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026.  She has been honoured with Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna and Padma Shri in 2018 (pic credit-ianslive.in). 

RIP…. 1990 – Naval Pirozsha Godrej, famous IIndian ndustrialist.  Grandson of  Godrej group founder Ardeshir Godrej ‘s  brother  Perojsha. He established  Machine Tools, Refrigeration and Typwriter manufacturing units of the Group. He was attacked by union leaders on Jan. 08, 1979 in his factory  but he survived the attack.

You may have known….There are 496 cities in India with a population of over 100,000, of which 46 cities have a population of over 1,000,000. Mumbai is the most populated city followed by Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

Born…. 1925 – Monkombu S. Swaminathan, is an Indian agronomist, agricultural scientist, plant geneticist, administrator and humanitarian. In the green revolution, Swaminathan is regarded as a global leader. For his role in introducing and further developing high-yielding wheat and rice varieties in India, he has been called the principal architect of the green revolution. His leadership as Director General of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines was instrumental in his being awarded the first World Food Prize in 1987, recognized as the Nobel or the highest honours in the field of agriculture. He has been referred to as ‘the father of economic ecology’ by the United Nations Environment Programme.

1935 – Rajmohan Gandhi, biographer, historian, and research professor at the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, US. . He is also a scholar in residence at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar. His father Devdas Gandhi was the fourth a son of  Mahatma Gandhi, editor of The Hindustan Times and had married  C Rajagopalachari’s daughter Laksmi.  He opposed Emergency imposed by  PM Indira Gandhi and supported JP Movement. Rajmohan  fought  Lok Sabha elections twice (from  Amethi against Rajiv in 1989 on Janata Dal  and  from East Delhi in 2014  on AAP ticket) but lost both times.  (pic credit-alchetron.com).

1955 – Suresh Ishwar Wadkar, playback singer, who sang Bhajans, films songs  in Hindi,  Marathi films as also in Odia Bhojpuri and Konkani. He was awarded Sangeet Natak Akademy honour in 2018  and Padma Shri in  2020 (pic credit-mid-day.com).

RIP….1941 – Rabindranath  Tagore also called  “Gurudev“,  the great Indian poet, voluminous playwright, Nobel Laureate, social reformer, freedom fighter, painter and philosopher. He will be always remembered for the national song “Jana Gana Mana” and as a founder of Vishwa Bharati, Shantiniketen. He  was awarded Nobel  Prize for Literature in for his poetry collection   Gitanjli in 1913. His stories Chokher Bali, Kabuliwala, Ghare Bahre, Gora etc. were some of the  works  adapted for popular movies.

1957 – Oliver Hardy, iconic  comedian of Laurel & Hardy team which was on top in classical American comedy series, mostly Silent Era. They made films like Saps at Sea, The Flying Deuaces, Day Out West, The Bohemian Girl, Sons of the Desert etc.

2018 – M Karunanidhi, a writer and politician who served as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for almost two decades over five terms between 1969 and 2011; the longest tenure as Chief Minister with 6,863 days in office. Before entering politics, he worked in the Tamil film industry as a screenwriter. He also made contributions to Tamil literature, having written stories, plays, novels, and a multiple-volume memoir. His son MK Stalin has been Tamil Nadu  CM (2021-26) and his daughter Konimozhi is an MP.

1753 – Professor Georg Richmann of St. Petersburg, Moscow, was killed by his experiment with lightning. Richmann attached a wire to the top of his house and led it down to an iron bar suspended above “the electric needle” and a bowl of water partly filled with iron filings*. It was reported that during a storm, Richmann was struck while about a foot from the bar, and closely observing the needle. “A globe of blue and whitish fire about four inches diameter” from the bar struck Richmann’s forehead” with “an explosion like that of a small cannon.” His assistant, M. Sokolaw, who survived, was thrown to the floor feeling blows on his back. He found marks of burning hot wire fragments on the back of his clothes (pic credit-X.com).

1862 – Madras High Court was established.

1890 – The electric chair was used for the first time, when William Kemmler was executed with 1,300 volts of alternating current in New York State for murdering a woman with an axe. The execution was botched. The first shock lasted only 17 seconds. As the body appeared to move, a much longer second jolt was given until it produced a smell of burning flesh. Thomas Edison wished the public to associate AC with danger and death, and promoted the electric chair to discredit Tesla’s AC system of electricity which competed with his own DC system (pic credit-ranker.com).

1906 – Prominent freedom fighter Chittaranjan Das and other Congress leaders together started the publication of “Vande Mataram” newspaper.

1930 – On 11 July 1897, Dr. Salomon August Andrée of Sweden and two companions had left Danes Island, Spitsbergen in a balloon, Eagle, which he had built himself, hoping to drift over the North Pole. This was the first attempt by air to explore the Arctic. Nothing was heard of them for 33 years. On 6 Aug 1930, Norwegian explorers discovered the debris of this earliest balloon expedition to the North Pole. They also found the remains of a balloonist, diaries and photos. The diaries recorded that just two days after their launch, an emergency landing on ice had been made. They eventually met their end in the bitter cold on the island, still hundreds of kilometres from the North Pole (pic crdit-pbs.org).

1945 – The first atomic bomb used in World War II was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan. The weapon, code-named “Little Boy,” was dropped from a United States Air Force B-29 bomber, The Enola Gay. This first bomb was a uranium bomb. (Three days later, a second atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki. The second bomb, code-named “Fat Man” was a plutonium bomb. The two bombings, which killed at least 129,000 people, remain the only use of nuclear weapons for warfare in history).

1998 – The Maharashtra Government rejects the Srikrishna Commission findings on the 1992-93 communal riots and the serial blasts in Mumbai, but agrees to act on the panel’s suggestions to refurbish the police force. (The report had heavily indicted the ruling alliance).

Born…. 1881 – Sir Alexander Fleming, Scottish bacteriologist who discovered Penicillin and  its curative effect in various infectious diseases. He was awarded Nobel Prize  for Physiology or Medicine in 1945.

1958- Mohammed Bana, an  Iranian Greco Roman  wrestler who won Asian Games Gold and coached his team in 2012 (3 Golds) and 2016-22.

1959 – Rajendra Singh, an environmental activist. He is famous for his work in the field of water conservation. The Alwar district of Rajasthan has been considered a dry region from the beginning, where water was considered a scarce commodity. At that time, making  rainwater  reservoirs  and keeping them safe was a traditional method, by which the problem of water scarcity was removed. These reservoirs were called ‘johad’. During the period of development, the work of quarries and deforestation of the foothills of the hills almost put an end to these johads. The men mostly fled the  city,  and the area was in a serious water crisis. Rajendra Singh understood the situation of this crisis fundamentally and decided to overcome it and founded “Tarun Bharat Sangh”, in which volunteer youths again returned to traditional johads, which solved the problem of water to a great extent. For this work, he was awarded the ‘Ramon Magsaysay Award‘ in 2001 (pic credit-globalindian.com). 

1960 – 1970 – M Night Shyamalan. Puducherry born Indo-American  scriptwriter, director and producer, who delves in spitritual and celestial subjects for his films. He has won a Golden Globe, 2 BFTA, 2  Academy award nomonations. His net worth is $ 80 billion (2024-25).  His popular films are  Unbreakable, Split, A Lady in the Water, The Village Signs, The Sixth Sense etc.

1987 – Aditya Narayan. Popular singer and son of  legendary singer Udit Narayan. Aditya has sung for Mohini (Nepalese),  Rangeela, Pardes, Akele Hum Akele Tum etc. He was host for Indian Idol, Fear Factor: Khatron ke Khiladi 9, Sare Gama Pa… etc. He has won Screen Award,  Zee Cine, ITAA and Ghanta Awards etc.

RIP…. 1925 – Surendranath Banerjee. Was a famous freedom fighter, who was twice elected President of the Congress. He is also known as the ‘Maker of Bengal’ of 1905. He founded the Indian National Committee, one of the earliest Indian political organizations, and later became a senior leader of the Indian National Congress. Surendranath Banerjee applied in England for admission to the Indian Civil Service (Indian Administrative Service) after graduation. At that time there was only one Hindu in this service. Banerjee was not included on the ground that he had misreported his age. Alleging discrimination on the basis of caste, Banerjee argued in his appeal that according to Hindu custom, he added his age from the time of conception. Not by birth and he won.
