1790 – Thomas Saint, a London cabinet maker, patented possibly the first sewing machine, fitted with an awl that makes a hole in leather and allows a needle to pass through it. This machine made a chain stitch with a tambour-type needle to produce a mechanical crochet or chain stitch.

1841 – British humour magazine “Punch” 1st published (pic credit-Gale).

1948 – Indian Govt. announced that all discriminations against women in matter of employment will be done away with and in future, women will be eligible for any public service including administrative service and police service.

1996 – Madras to be known as ‘Chennai’ henceforth.

2014 – Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 is hit by a missile while flying over eastern Ukraine, the location of heavy fighting by pro-Russian separatists; the origin of the missile is not yet known; all 298 people aboard the plane were killed in the attack.

1935 – David Sutherland. Canadian actor, who won a Grammy award and 2 Golden Globe awards.

1947 – Camilla Parker Bowles. The Queen of England, is 2nd wife of King Charles III after death of Princess Diana in 1987 in a car accident.

1954 – Angela Markel. Former Chancellor of Germany.  The first woman to occupy the post Germany (2005-2021)

1959 – Zarina Wahab, popular romantic actor. Started her career with Ishq Ishq Ishq and gave very scintilating performances in Chit Chor, Gharonda, Sawan ko Aane Do, Gopal Krishna, Sitara, Zazbaat and TV shows like Yahan Mein Ghar Ghar Kheli, Meri Awaz hi Pehchan Hai etc. She won Filmfare Award for Gharonda and nominated for Stardust 50 Years awards.

Died Today:  2005 -Edward George Heath. British Prime Minister from 1971-74.
