1783 – Jean Francois Pilatre de Rozier, a professor of physics and chemistry, and the Marquis Francois Laurant d’Arlandes became the first men to make a free flight. Their hot-air balloon lifted off from La Muettte, a royal palace in the Bois de Boulogne, Paris. They flew nearly 6 miles in 25 mins, reaching an altitude, it is thought, of around 3000-ft . 1871 – The first U.S. patent for a cigar lighter was issued to Moses F. Gale of New York City.
1877 – Thomas Edison announced his invention of his “talking machine” – the tin-foil cylinder recorder that preceded the phonograph. He appears to have envisioned it as a business dictation machine.
1905 – 1st game ever played in the Australian Tennis Open.
1922 – Rebecca L. Felton sworn in as 1st female U.S. Senator.
1947 – First postal stamp of independent India of three and half annas denomination was started.
1947 – Major General Cariappa took over from Lieutenant General Sir Francies Tulker as the Army Commander, Eastern Command, in the rank of Lieutenant General.
1962 – The Chinese People’s Liberation Army declares a unilateral cease-fire in the Sino-Indian War.
1969 – Bhilai Steel Plant creates a new world record in steel-making by producing ‘one heat’ in four hours three minutes.
1973 – Seth Govinddas, M.P. of Jabalpur, was honoured in the Central Hall of Parliament for completion of 50 years in Parliament, which was an unprecedented record.
1993 – India and South Africa sign a historic pact on re-establishing diplomatic and consular relations after a gap of 50 years.
