1307 – William Tell shoots apple off his son’s head. (William Tell is a folk hero of Switzerland) .
1477 – English printer William Caxton, produced the first book printed in England (pic credit-Interesting Literature).
1793 – Louvre museum officially opens in Paris. (It is the world’s largest art museum and a historic monument. Approximately 38,000 objects from prehistory to the 21st century are exhibited over an area of 72,735 square metres).
845 – Charles Thurber was issued a U.S. patent for a Writing Machine he named the Chirographer.
1913 – The first airplane in the U.S. to perform a loop-the-loop was piloted by Lincoln Beachey over North Isalnd, San Diego, California. By 1912, he had become a stunt pilot of great repute. (He died in 1915, at age 28, from a crash while performing stunts at the Panama-Pacific Exhibition, California).
1950 – The first fluoro-record reflector camera was announced. This could make x-ray pictures in one-sixth of the time previously required, and was used for gastro-intestinal surveys.
1961 – The Indian Navy went into action under the command of Rear Admiral BS Soman, then Flag Officer Commanding, Indian Fleet. The ships conducted their mission in three geographical areas for liberating Goa (pic credit-Wikipedia).
1963 – The first telephone in the U.S. with push buttons instead of a rotary dial was placed in commercial service in Carnegie and Greensburg.
1970 – Nobel Prize winner, Linus Pauling declared that large doses of Vitamin C could ward off the common cold.
1972 – Tiger was adopted as India’s ‘National Animal’.
2012 – The film ‘Chinese Zodiac’ featuring martial arts star Jackie Chan, would be the last film made by the action star (pic credit- X.com).
2012 – Israeli Gaza rocket strikes kill 80 alleged terrorist targets
2018 – American missionary John Allen Chau killed on forbidden North Sentinel Island, Bay of Bengal by one of world’s most isolated tribe.
2022 – International Bureau of Weights and Measures votes to abandon the leap second (to take effect 2035). Originally inserted in 1972 to reconcile atomic
and astronomical time scales.
