1848 – Gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill, California. This initiated the

California Gold Rush. Some nuggets of gold in native metallic form were simply lying on the ground. More were found by panning streambeds, and later, increasingly technological mining methods were employed. (As recently as 2011, the discovery in northern California of a 100-ounce gold nugget was reported).

1857 – The University of Calcutta is formally founded as the first full-fledged university in south Asia.

1899 – The first U.S. patent for a rubber heel was issued to Humphrey O’Sullivan. His patent described it as a “safety heel”.

1900 – Newcastle Badminton Club, world’s oldest, forms in England.

1924 – Russian city of St Petersburg renamed Leningrad; it was changed back in 1991.

1935 – 1st canned beer, “Kruger Cream Ale,” is sold by American company Kruger Brewing Co.

1937 – Gandhi announces that he will retire from politics.

1950 – The original microwave oven patent was issued to its inventor Percy LeBaron Spencer under the title “Method of Treating Foodstuffs.”

1950 – ‘Jana Gana Mana….’ was accepted as the National Anthem of the country.

1958 – After warming to 100,000,000 degrees, 2 light atoms are bashed together to create a heavier atom, resulting in 1st man-made nuclear fusion.

1966 – Indira Gandhi becomes Prime Minister of India. She continued in this office till March 24, 1977, after winning the General Elections. She became the only second woman in modern history to head a government.

2014 – Today marks the anniversary of the release of the Apple Macintosh; the computer had a 9-inch monochrome display, 128 KB of memory and a 3.5″ slot for a floppy disk.


1921 – General TN Raina, former Army Chief.

1945 – Subhash Ghai, film producer.

1981 – Riya Sen, actor.


1566 – Mughal king Humayun. Two days earlier he had slipped on the staircase of a library being constructed at the Old Fort.

1966 – Homi J Bhabha, physicist.

2011 – Bhimsen Joshi, singer.
