1845 – Ether anaesthetics was first used in childbirth by Dr. Crawford W. Long in Jefferson, Georgia, US. He gave it to his wife, who successfully delivered their second child. Dr. Long’s accomplishment in 1842 is widely considered to represent the discovery of surgical anaesthesia.

1911 – Jana Gana Mana…., ‘India’s National Anthem, was first sung at the Indian National Congress session held at Calcutta.

1975 – Explosion at Chasnala Colliery in Dhanbad, India, collapses drowning 350.

1977 – The Congress party splits into two factions, one supporting and one opposing Indira Gandhi.

1992 – The Central government decides to acquire the disputed area in Ayodhya.

2007 – Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto is assassinated by a suicide bomber.

2013 – An error on the Delta Air Lines website allows thousands of customers to buy tickets for super-low fares, some 90% below regular ticket prices; Delta took responsibility for the error, and said it would honour ticket purchases as well as frequent flier miles earned on the reduced-fare flights.
