1850 – The first U.S. patent for magic lantern slides made of glass plate was issued to their inventor Frederick Langenheim of Philadelphia.

1872 – The first U.S. patent for an adding machine capable of printing totals and subtotals, called a “calculating machine,” was issued to E.D. Barbour of Boston. However, it was not practical.

1893 – 1st newspaper colour supplement (New York World).

1895 – The first U.S. patent for a paper pencil was issued to Fredrick E. Blaisdell of Philadelphia.

1928 – 1st issue of Time magazine. (Japanese Emperor Hirohito on cover).

1962 – Nehru asks more US aid as China drives into India.

1978 – Gavaskar gets twin cricket tons for India for 2nd time.

1994 – Aishwarya Rai, 21, of India, crowned 44th Miss World.

1998 – A. B. Vajpayee approves formation of the National Security Council, a new high-power hub, to give policy directions to safeguard the country’s security.

2002 – A U.S. patent for “Registered pedigree stuffed animals” was issued to David L. Pickens of Honolulu, Hawaii. The toy animals are designed to simulate the biological laws of inheritance both for educational, recreational and aesthetic purposes.

2018 – Ivanka Trump sent “hundreds” of emails from her personal account about government business, according to Washington Post report.


1828 – Rani Lakmi Bai. (She was one of the leading figures of the Indian War of Independence of 1857 and became a symbol of resistance to the British Raj for Indian nationalists).

1917 – Indira (Pridarshani) Gandhi, the first Indian Lady Prime Minister. She took active part in freedom fight by forming “Vanar Sena” (a team of young detectives). She led India in a successful war against Pakistan to separate East and West Pakistans and establish the nation of Bangladesh.

1922 – Salil Chowdhury, music director.

1928 – Dara Singh (Randhawa), wrestler, actor and politician.

1950 – Rehana Sultan, actor.

1951 – Zeenat Aman, actor.

1968 – Mani Shankar, film director.

1975 – Sushmita Sen, actor and former Miss Universe.
