Cong rues SC decision on releasing Rajiv killers

In Rajiv assassination: case, Supreme Court has ordered release of 6 convicts premature

New Delhi: The Congress on Friday expressed disappointment over the Supreme Court’s decision of premature release of six convicts of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination case and termed it ‘unacceptable’.
“The decision of the SC to set free the remaining killers of former PM Rajiv Gandhi is totally unacceptable and completely erroneous.
“The Congress Party criticizes it clearly and finds it wholly untenable,” Congress general secretary in-charge of Communications Jairam Ramesh said in a statement.
The Congress MP added, “It is most unfortunate that the Supreme Court has not acted in consonance with the spirit of India on this issue.”
The apex court in its order on Friday directed that the six convicts who are undergoing life imprisonment in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, including Nalini Sriharan and R P Ravichandran, be set free forthwith.
The court noted their remission of sentence as recommended by the Tamil Nadu state government, and directed their release.
Echoing a similar sentiment, Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi said,” The decision of release has shocked the nation’s conscience.”
“A fatal attack on any PM (former or sitting) is an attack on the very sovereignty and integrity of India and cannot be dealt with a normal administrative consideration,” he said.
Singhvi added,” We will take all appropriate remedies available to us.” (UNI)
