1868 – Thomas Edison patents his first invention: the electric voice machine.
1881 – David Houston patents roll film for cameras. (George Eastman bought 21 patents on cameras from, including the invention that made Houston famous – a portable camera, for which Houston received $5,000 plus monthly royalties for life. This camera suited everyday person, rather than a professional photographer’s studio camera on wheels. First sold by Eastman in 1881 for $25, the Kodak camera came loaded with 100-exposure film that Houston would process and reload the camera for $10. Houston died a rich man in 1906).
1887 – A Miles patents elevator.
1887 – A patent for the adding machine was granted to Dorr Eugene Felt of Chicago. (His Comptometer was the first practical key-driven calculator with sufficient speed, reliability and economic benefit. He called his original prototype the “Macaroni box”).
1890 – First 100-yard dash under 10 seconds (John Owens 9-4/5 secs, Washington).
1939 – Albert Einstein informs FDR of possibilities of atomic bomb.
1962 – Chinese, Indian troops clash on border, claiming 50 lives.
1983 – The last hand-cranked (magneto) telephone in US went out of service.
1986 – Mother Teresa escapes unhurt from a plane crash which killed six in Tanzania.1990 – Libya’s Qadhafi says Israel must be eliminated.
1991 – BJP government in UP acquires the disputed Ayodhya land.2013 – Nearly 500,000 people evacuated from India’s Odisha and Andhra Pradesh states in preparation for Cyclone Phailin.
