1825 – The first locomotive to haul a passenger train was operated by George Stephenson’s Stockton & Darlington’s line in England. This proved the launchpad for the development of the railways, which was to take the world by storm over the following years.

1854 – The first great disaster involving an Atlantic Ocean liner occurred when the steamship S.S. Arctic sank and over 300 lives lost.

1905 – The physics journal Annalen der Physik publishes Albert Einstein’s paper “Does the Inertia of a Body Depend Upon Its Energy Content?”, introducing the equation E=mc².

1908 – The first Ford Model T car left the factory. It had a 20-hp 4-cylinder engine, with versions starting at $850.

1922 – Scientists at the Naval Aircraft Radio Laboratory near Washington demonstrated that if a ship passed through a radio wave being broadcast between two stations, that ship could be detected, the essentials of radar.

1925 – Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh was established.

1950 – Mihir Sen became the first Indian to swim across the British Channel.

1950 – The answering machine was invented.

1960 – Europe’s first “moving pavement”, the travelator, opened at Bank Underground station.

1995 – 73 people died in a coal mine accident in Gaslitand in Dhanbad district, Bihar, when flood water leaked into the mine.

1996 – In Afghanistan, the Taliban capture the capital city Kabul after driving out President Burhanuddin Rabbani

and executing former leader Mohammad Najibullah.

2015 – A “Supermoon” coincides with a lunar eclipse creating a “Blood Moon” over much of the earth.

2018- India’s Supreme Court rules overturns 158-year old rule, section 497, decriminalizing adultery because it was discriminatory against women.

1873 – Vithalbhai Patel, great freedom fighter, social worker, nationalist leader, politician and President of the Central Assembly.

1932 – Yash Chopra, film director.

1953 – Mata Amrotanandamayi, a Hindu spiritual leader and guru who is revered as a saint by her followers.

RIP….

1833 – Raja Rammohan Roy, great social reformer, lawyer and politician passed away at Stapleton Grove in England.

You may have known….
