Gupkar, non-BJP leaders committee to meet ECI and state CEO

Jammu: The All-party meeting convened by the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration on Saturday with non-BJP political parties of Jammu province on the issue of alleged voting rights to non-local citizens residing in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, advocated for formation of a committee with responsibilities to be distributed among its members.
This is the second meeting of PAGD on the voting right to non-locals’ issues chaired by its patron and National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah.
PAGD Vice President and PDP head Mehbooba Mufti, Spokesperson and CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami among others were also present in the meeting.
All the mainstream non-BJP political parties, social and business organizations in Jammu province attended the meeting.
The more than two hours long meeting held at the Jammu office of Dr Farooq Abdullah expressed opinion against voting rights to the non-locals.
Speaking to the media later, Dr Abdullah said, “We have strongly objected to the decision and intention of the election officer, so, we have decided to form a committee to chalk out the strategy to fight this challenge.”
The committee will also meet the Election Commission and the Chief Electoral Officer of Jammu and Kashmir.
“BJP wants to win Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir to form the government and fearing that they will lose the elections, outside voters are being registered,” said Abdullah.
“We won’t let that happen,” Dr Abdullah added.
“We have no faith in the Central Government, Lieutenant Governor or the Returning Officer. Even before August 5, 2019, it was assured that nothing would happen, but our identity and special status were snatched,” said the PADG Patron.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised to end ‘Dilli aur DilKi Doori’ but the contrary to that ‘Dil aur Dilli Ki Doori’ has further increased,” he said. (UNI)
