CWG: Ravi Dahiya strikes gold in 57kg wrestling

Birmingham: Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Ravi Kumar Dahiya won the gold medal in the men’s 57kg freestyle wrestling at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Saturday. Indian wrestlers have already grabbed 6 golds at Commonwealth Games 2022 out of 13 in India’s kitty. Yet India stands at 5th position with 11 silver and 16 bronze medals.
Dahiya defeated Nigeria’s Ebikewenimo Welson in the final by technical superiority 10-0 to clinch top honor on his CWG debut at the Coventry Stadium and Arena.
Welson, who is a three-time CWG medalist, attempted an attack early on but Ravi defended well. A minute into the bout, Indian caught hold of the Nigerian’s legs and twirled them around in succession to score quick points.
Welson rolled out of the ring to escape an immediate defeat but the Dahiya earnd two more points soon after play resumed and won the bout by technical superiority.
Earlier, Pooja Gehlot clinched the bronze medal in the women’s 50kg category after beating Christelle Lemofack of Scotland by technical superiority 12-2. Gehlot lost her semifinal bout 6-9 to Canada’s Madison Parks in a thrilling bout. (UNI)
