Commonwealth’22: Sushila Devi settles for silver in 48 Kg Judo

Birmingham: India is assured of adding one more medal into its tally as Judoka Shushila Devi Likmabam takes on South Africa’s Michaela Whitebooi in the gold medal match in the 48 kg category later tonight at 2022 Commonwealth Games here on Monday.
The Indian Judoka beat Harriet Bonface and Priscilla Morand in her quarterfinal and semifinal matches, respectively.
Meanwhile, Judoka Jasleen Singh Saini will battle for a bronze medal after losing to Scotland’s Finlay Allan in the men’s 66kg semifinal at the Games.
The match lasted for a little less than two and a half minutes after the Scot performed an ‘Ippon’ in the match.
Ippon is a full throw in which a contestant throws his/her rival to the mat with considerable force and speed. It is also awarded when a contestant immobilizes his rival with a grappling hold-down for 20 seconds, or when an opponent gives up or passes out.
Later tonight, India’s Vijay Kumar Yadav beat Dylon Munro of Scotland by waza-ari in the 60kg category.
Waza- ari is a throw in which the opponent is thrown with control and accuracy, but not to the extent of an ippon, or held on the back for between 20 and 25 seconds on the mat. The score of half a point is awarded for this throw.
Vijay Kumar will fight Petros Christodoulides of Cyprus for the bronze medal. (UNI)
