1832 – 1st railroad accident in U.S.

1854 – Walter Hunt of New York City was awarded the first U.S. patent for a paper shirt collar. Walter Hunt was a prolific inventor, best known for the safety pin and as developer of the first repeating rifle.

1871 – The first U.S. patent for perforated wrapping paper was awarded to Seth Wheeler of Albany, NY. The paper was wound into rolls and could easily be torn off at the perforations

1909 – French aviator Louis Blériot flew across the English Channel in a monoplane, travelling from Calais, France, to Dover, England, in 37 minutes. This was the world’s first international overseas airplane flight.

1946 – 1st bikini is shown at a Paris fashion show.

1959 – A hovercraft crossed the English Channel for the first time.

1961 – Delhi upgraded as an A-class city on the basis of provisional Census figures of 1961.

1978 – Louise Joy Brown, the first test tube baby was born in Oldham, England. She had been conceived through the technique of in-vitro fertilisation.

1983 – 1st non-human primate, baboon, conceived in a lab dish, San Antonio.

1984 – Soviet cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya, made her second trip into space, during which she became the first woman to walk in space.

1997 – Laloo Yadav resigns as Bihar Chief Minister after CBI-designated court issues an arrest warrant against him in fodder scam case. His wife, Rabri Devi, is sworn in as his successor. She becomes first woman Chief Minister of the State.

2000 – P.T. Usha, Star Indian athlete, announces retirement from International athletics at a press conference in New Delhi.

2007 – Pratibha Patil is sworn in as India’s 1st female President.

2017 – Sperm counts have halved in last 40 years says research published in “Human Reproduction Update” journal.

2018 – Liquid lake found on Mars under its South Pole by European Space Agency’s Mars Express orbiter reported in “Science”.

2019 – US Justice department announces resumption of use of the death penalty, scheduling five executions
