RTI rattlers:120 prisoners freed on parole missing
Nagpur: As many as 120 prisoners who were released on parole from the Nagpur Central Jail in the last 29 months have gone missing, jail authorities revealed in response to an application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
A total of 493 prisoners were released on parole from the prison between January 1, 2020 and May 31, 2022. Of them, 373 returned to prison till May 31, 2022.
The remaining 120 have jumped parole, the RTI query revealed.
The months when they were released on parole includes the Covid-19 pandemic period during which many prisoners were let off.
During the same 29 months, a total of 9,155 new prisoners were lodged in the Central Jail and 8,461 were either released from prison or out on bail.
As on May 31, a total of 2,830 prisoners were lodged in Nagpur. These included the highest 991 undertrials, followed by 563 under judicial custody, 420 serving life imprisonment, 347 serving rigorous imprisonment, 162 MCOCA prisoners and 126 NDPS prisoners.
Besides, 77 Naxalites were lodged in the Central Jail. Also, during the period, 15 inmates died. (UNI)
