NDA’s Draupadi Murmu to file nomination today
Prez. candidate meets President Kovind, VP, PM and other top leaders of BJP in Delhi
New Delhi: The ruling NDA’s presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu arrived in the national capital on Thursday, and was welcomed by a host of BJP leaders.
Murmu will file her nomination for the Presidential polls on Friday.
The former Jharkhand governor was received at the Delhi airport by union ministers G Kishan Reddy and Meenakshi Lekhi, along with several other BJP leaders.
Murmu met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP President JP Nadda and several other top leaders of the ruling party.
“Met Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji. Her Presidential nomination has been appreciated across India by all sections of society. Her understanding of grassroots problems and vision for India’s development is outstanding,” PM Modi said in a tweet.
PM Modi is expected to accompany Murmu, along with top party leaders when she files her nomination tomorrow.
The ruling party of Odisha Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has supported Murmu, and two Cabinet Ministers of Odisha, Jagannath Saraka and Tukuni Sahu, signed the nomination papers of Murmu at New Delhi. They will also be present today with the Presidential candidate at the time of her filing the nomination.
Speculations are rife that the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), which is leading the ruling alliance in Jharkhand with Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal, may also support Murmu who has served as a governor of the state in past and hails from the tribal community.
In the fray against Murmu is former union minister Yashwant Sinha, who is candidate of the Opposition camp.
The process to elect the new president began on June 15. The last date for filing of nominations is June 29. The polls, if necessary, will be held on July 18 and the counting on July 21.(UNI)
