India reach 109/2 at lunch

Mohali, March 4 (UNI) India reached 109/2 at lunch on Day 1 of the first Test against Sri Lanka at the IS Bindra PCA Stadium here on Friday. Virat Kohli, who is playing his 100th Test match, joined Hanuma Vihari in the middle after captain Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal were dismissed by Lahiru Kumara and Lasith Embuldeniya, respectively. Vihari, who stepped into the big shoes of Cheteshwar Pujara batting at No.3, looked solid at one end, while Kohli fought the early jitters and settled down. Umpires called for lunch, with Kohli batting on 15 and Vihari on 30. In the post-lunch session, Kohli would like to repeat the 2017-18 feat against Sri Lanka. He had notched up 610 runs after scoring one century and two double hundred. Earlier, Rohit (29) and Mayank (33) gave India a brisk start by taking the hosts past the 50-run mark with ease. But soon, Kumara came into the act. He enticed Rohit to pull him for the third time in the over and was successful. The Indian opener pulled uppishly straight into the hands of Suranga Lakmal at long leg, after he had cracked two boundaries. Mayank missed one that slid and caught him plumb in front of Embuldeniya. He walked off without reviewing.
