New Delhi, Feb 22 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Maharashtra government to stay the ongoing investigation against former Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir Singh, over his alleged allegations of misconduct and corruption. A Bench of the Apex Court, headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and also comprising Justice MM Sundresh, expressed its displeasure over the “messy state of affairs” seen in the ongoing legal tussle between Singh and the state administration. “It is a very very unfortunate situation,” the Court noted. The bench said the matter has the propensity of unnecessarily shaking the confidence of people in police system. The process of law must be carried in a proper manner. The Supreme Court posted the plea filed by Singh for final disposal for March 9, and asked the state of Maharashtra to completely lay off its hands from the issue. Senior Advocate P Khambata, appearing for Maharashtra government, has assured the Supreme Court that in all senses, the matter will remain on hold. The apex court said that it will take a call on whether the FIRs lodged by Maharashtra police against Singh be handed over to CBI or not and asked the state government to keep its hands off from those cases till it decides the issue. It recorded in its order that the state government has given its assurance to put the matter on hold, while the top court of the country was considering the matter. It asked the parties to file a written synopsis and posted the matter for hearing on March 9. The apex court was hearing a petition filed by Singh, seeking protection from coercive steps by Mumbai police in the cases registered against him. Singh, a 1988-batch IPS officer, was removed from the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner on March 17 and was made the General Commander of Maharashtra State Home Guard, after he levelled allegations against Deshmukh. The top court of the country said that it will take a call on whether the FIRs lodged by Maharashtra police against the former top cop of Mumbai, Param Bir Singh, be handed over to CBI or not and asked the state government to keep its hands off from those cases till it decides the issue.
